sound server issues, ALSA overloading cpu
 

hello people. ive a problem with my sound. i use a dell Inspiron 2500, with Mdk9.2. first, system sound is REEEAAALLL quiet. secondly. whenever i start x, esp. in KDE, the startup sequence freezes temporarily on Starting Peripherals. Then it shows
"fatal error : cpu overload cannot start sound server"

when i use XMMS or xine, etc., sound plays ok. but system notifications, etc., stuff like that, is nonexistent. does anyone have similar problems? what can i do? ive changed my sound driver, recompiled my kernel, but still no show . pls help

I've got an on-chip integrated sound card. NVidia nforce chipset. Sound through arts (KDE sound server) sucks. Scratchy, etc. And occasionally a CPU overloading the sound server error. Sound without arts is cool. I'm still experimenting...
