sound server fatal error, cpu overload:aborting.

I upgraded on our Redhat 9.0 box the kernel to the newest Redhat kernel (2.4.20-30.9). Since the soundcard in the computer is a Yamaha card I had to reinstall the ALSA drivers. I took the newest rpms from ATRPMS for the appropriate kernel and installed it. That went without any issues. But now when KDE starts up, the screen freezes for a few secs and I get the message "sound server fatal error, cpu overload:aborting.". But the sound is there. What can be causing this and how can I fix it?

In my experience, this is caused by having the wrong server selected for aRTS. So go to the KDE Control Center=>Sound and Multimedia=> Sound Server=>Sound I/O tab and change the server from the default of "Auto Detect" to ALSA (or better still, OSS/Threaded OSS, since you most likely have OSS emulation by ALSA, and OSS seems to work better with aRTS).

Hope this helps.
