easy install

futurist don't give up and make it easy on yourself at first. I am using RH 7.2 (enigma). When you do an install try this.

#1. When it asks for the type of install do "custom"
#2. Then select and download the whole ball of wax (assuming you have the room)
#3. The install should ask you if you want a graphical interface startup. Say yes and choose gnome or kde for your interface.

In this way you will automatically log in with x started. Once you adjust to the system you'll discover why startx wasn't working for you. Be patient it will build character in you and you will be empowered by the linux OS.

I use fdisk /mbr to remove the linux bootloader.

then use partition magic to delete linux partitions, recreate and reformat partition.

Linux is gone, now I run Windows ME and XP on the same machine, everything is perfect!!!

Crazy Linux, go to hell!!!! Waste my time and money !!!

Last week I installed ASP Linux 7.1, it can run , can go into GNOME,
don't know why this REDHAT screwed up????

RED-DEVIL , go to hell , goddamned Linux, bullshit OS!

I printed out the installation guide for redhat from internet and read and understand and follow exactly, i choose graphic boot up, but can not!

Do "mcedit /var/log/XFree96.0.log", scroll to the end of the file and tell me what error messages you see. The X server always writes to this log file when you do "startx" and if it fails then the log will identify what part failed.

Forget it guys, he obviously doesn't have what it takes to run a real OS. It's people like him that Winfroze was suited for.

Good luck futurist, don't let the kernel hit you in the a$$ on your way out. kkthxplsdrvthru.

if you know nothing of unix, why are you installing it ? you might want to read up on something before using it. i wouldn't try to fly a plane without knowing how to fly it first..

and i wouldn't curse linux, it didn't do anything to you. but you did let it defeat you... so you should only curse yourself for not being able to get it working.

trickykid, it ain't fair. He never showed any respect. I smell a troll. And he's almost used up all his profanity and he's still not banned. He doesn't have any desire to learn: first step: RTFM. He doesn't want to read.

I just try to help anyone. He does seem to not try anything anyone has even advised him to do so far. I am trying to be polite. He is just a confused newbie that shouldn't even be trying to install a OS that he fully doesn't understand. And he hasn't shown any respect to Linux or the one's helping him out. If he keeps it up, most likely he might be banned, but that is up to Jeremy.
Most likely he is just frustrated cause he is used to a OS that does everything for him and doesn't fully understand that Linux doesn't do that at this point in time and it takes a better understanding of computers and the unix OS to use.

oh well.. Windows was clearly meant for him, if he gave up so quickly, then Linux wasn't made for him.. that is why he let it defeated him.

I installed ASP Linux successfully on my second harddrive,
it is fully compatible to linux redhat,

when i am in Gnome,
how to further install additional packages that i did not install before??? please teach me in details, thanks.

in Gnome, it does not detect my CDROM and floppy drive, how to get it detected?

when i change to KDE, CDROM and floppy drive can be detected easily, why?

my ISP info is below:
name: tmnet
login name: yingsiew
password: (secret)
DNS : 202.188.1.133 and 202.188.1.5

i can detect modem, can dial but can not get conneted,
what can i do now?

trickykid 03-31-2002 01:23 AM

no one here is here to teach. we can answer questions. asking how to install apps has been asked a million times. depending on how or what your installing can differ from package to package. your best chance is first read the readme or install files, also look at the howto's.. search this site as well.

gnome doesn't automatically have cdrom and floppy icons like kde creates by default. you can create your own or mount the drives when needed in a terminal.

if you give us details on the errors you recieve on your modem, it might help us.. we can't read minds here and can't assume. details helps us help you...

That really helps us with the Linux problems you have. And to let you know, no one here really cares you love Windows, especially on a linux site.

futurist, why are you even trying Linux if you don't like it? It's obvious you don't have the knack for it. Go back to Winfroze where you're content to let M$ hand-hold you through everything you need to do. There's nothing for you here :newbie:
