my Linux crashed
hi
i started my linux and GUI is not working error is "i cannot start X server (your graphical interface) Is is likely that it is not set up correctlky. Would you like to view X server output to diagnose problem?" i selected Yes and next screen is "Fatal error cannot moce old logfile "var/log/XFree86.0.log.old" When reporting a problem realted to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last message. Please report the problems to xfree86@xfree86.org what should i do now??? install the whole linux again?? Regards |
Did you do something to change the permissions for the things in /usr? X has to run with the suid bit set so it runs as root. Login as root and
cd /usr/X11R6/bin chmod 4711 X XFree86 |
Hold on a sec. Before you start trying solutions, let's try to diagnose the problem.
Has X (the GUI) ever worked on this computer, or is this a fresh install? What distro are you using (Suse, Slackware, Mandrake,...)? What kind of video card do you have? How are you trying to start X? Does your computer normally boot into GUI or Console? Give us a little more info before you start poking around too much (though Andrew's suggestion shouldn't break anything). Enjoy! --- Cerbere |
