my Linux crashed


hi
i started my linux and GUI is not working
error is

"i cannot start X server (your graphical interface) Is is likely that it is not set up correctlky. Would you like to view X server output to diagnose problem?"
i selected Yes and next screen is
"Fatal error
cannot moce old logfile "var/log/XFree86.0.log.old"
When reporting a problem realted to a server crash, please send the full server output, not just the last message.
Please report the problems to xfree86@xfree86.org


what should i do now??? install the whole linux again??

Did you do something to change the permissions for the things in /usr? X has to run with the suid bit set so it runs as root. Login as root and
cd /usr/X11R6/bin
chmod 4711 X XFree86

Hold on a sec. Before you start trying solutions, let's try to diagnose the problem.

Has X (the GUI) ever worked on this computer, or is this a fresh install?

What distro are you using (Suse, Slackware, Mandrake,...)?

What kind of video card do you have?

How are you trying to start X? Does your computer normally boot into GUI or Console?

Give us a little more info before you start poking around too much (though Andrew's suggestion shouldn't break anything).

hi
i have redhat linux 9
it was working properly in gui
but after problem it didnt run any GUI
i have 32 MB VGA of SIS menufecturer

well
i installed the custome packages...and packages that start with X....
mmmm
i was able to run in GUI but
now when root tries to create a user it creats it but when set a password..
it gives error...
in GUI mode if i opne user and group console..it returns error that
you dont have permisions

it means root is corrupt now??
