Mandrake Or Redhat
 

I was earlier trying to install mandrake and couldnt turns out maybe my cds were the prob or my download was missing somehting...anyway...

ill have to download again, but im thinking which one is better
REDHAT or MAndrake?? looks wise and specs??

The galaxy theme for KDE&Gnome beats RH's BlueCurve ;)
But seriously, there's a few less technicalities to deal with, like not having to download mp3 support, which makes Mandrake just that little easier and faster to setup and use. :)

I've never used Mandrake..but heard that Mandrake is based on Red Hat...

IF U R an absolute newbie, MDK might be a good start, otherwise give RED HAT a shot...

Mandrake was based off of Redhat, at RH v.5 or something, but now they are really thier own distro (except for RPMs).

For newbies, Id DEFINITLY recommned Mandrake. I havent been able to get one computer to install Redhat right, its install process is so stupid (you cant skip packages, and packages somehow get currupt on a perfect burn).

Plus, it comes w/ NTFS and MP3 support, almost a necessity.

Couldn't resist answering your question, cause actually i asked the same when i started out :).

I started out with Mandrake i think two years back, and then stopped with linux for a while, then i started again with Redhat, and to this day i'm still using it and will continue for the rest of my life. Works great for me,except for a small prob i'm fixing now.

About the mp3 support thing, you just need to install an rpm from

http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/

to make xmms play them, and then download the latest version of lame you can get your hands on to encode you music cd's. Everything should work out well :)

Personally though i think you have to try both and then decide :)

i vote for redhat, but you should try both and see which one *you* like better (or hate less :D ).

Hunh... I would go SuSe if I were you.

I'm now standarized on RH (shop standardised on it so I followed - didn't like it but heck that's life). I'll have to admit that RH jsut works. Apart for their mp3 support - but that';s easy to fix as a previous poster pointed out.

Sorry - though Mandrake may be more friendly for a newbie - if it does not work on your hardware you're just not serviced. Admit it (I hate to admit it myself) RH is most supported, in case of problems you'll have more luck finding help as it just happens to be the most widely used distro.

When I borwse the problems here I can't help but noticing a LOT of mandrake problems.... proportinally much, given the use of Mandrake.

I may be wrong. Just my 2cts. Suse 's the best, RH a (close) second.

Oh - and the comments about RH not letting you choose packages during install is plain WRONG!

Definitely Mandrake for newbie.

mandrake is good enough, nicer screen design.

Since Mandrake 9.1 i've been windows free redhat 9.0 suxx "just my opinion" if you choose redhat go with 8.0 or 7.2.Redhat 9.0 was easier to install on my system but i only ran it for a month and spent most of my time in mandrake. Like the others say it depends on what you use it for. And what type of system you have.

RedHat = Mandrake and Mandrake = RedHat... they are the same. Mandrake was created from RH source code, so don't expect a big difference.

just kidding...there is no right answer. I prefer RH over Mndk, but it is for silly reasons and now, I believe that Mdk has ntfs resizer packed in which could be handy for the new user. Either way you can't lose, only Bill Gates loses!
