Mandrake Or Redhat

I was earlier trying to install mandrake and couldnt turns out maybe my cds were the prob or my download was missing somehting...anyway...

ill have to download again, but im thinking which one is better
REDHAT or MAndrake?? looks wise and specs??

thanks

DrOzz 06-12-2003 01:25 PM

i prefer redhat over mdk

Proud 06-12-2003 01:28 PM

Mandrake :D
The galaxy theme for KDE&Gnome beats RH's BlueCurve ;)
But seriously, there's a few less technicalities to deal with, like not having to download mp3 support, which makes Mandrake just that little easier and faster to setup and use. :)

lnxkido 06-12-2003 01:44 PM

I've never used Mandrake..but heard that Mandrake is based on Red Hat...

IF U R an absolute newbie, MDK might be a good start, otherwise give RED HAT a shot...

Good luck !!

contrasutra 06-12-2003 01:50 PM

Mandrake was based off of Redhat, at RH v.5 or something, but now they are really thier own distro (except for RPMs).

For newbies, Id DEFINITLY recommned Mandrake. I havent been able to get one computer to install Redhat right, its install process is so stupid (you cant skip packages, and packages somehow get currupt on a perfect burn).

Plus, it comes w/ NTFS and MP3 support, almost a necessity.

PS. This has been asked A LOT, so search the forums.

PPS. This should be in the "distributions" section.

:D

Hi,
Couldn't resist answering your question, cause actually i asked the same when i started out :).

I started out with Mandrake i think two years back, and then stopped with linux for a while, then i started again with Redhat, and to this day i'm still using it and will continue for the rest of my life. Works great for me,except for a small prob i'm fixing now.

About the mp3 support thing, you just need to install an rpm from

http://havardk.xmms.org/dist/xmms-1.2.7-rh8-rh9-rpm/

to make xmms play them, and then download the latest version of lame you can get your hands on to encode you music cd's. Everything should work out well :)

Personally though i think you have to try both and then decide :)

Thanks everyone i guess i will go with mandrake 9.1

yowwww 06-12-2003 05:11 PM

should have gone with red hat 9, oh well

if you are still deciding, check out my guide in my sig below

synaptical 06-12-2003 05:27 PM

i vote for redhat, but you should try both and see which one *you* like better (or hate less :D ).

Hunh... I would go SuSe if I were you.

I'm now standarized on RH (shop standardised on it so I followed - didn't like it but heck that's life). I'll have to admit that RH jsut works. Apart for their mp3 support - but that';s easy to fix as a previous poster pointed out.

Sorry - though Mandrake may be more friendly for a newbie - if it does not work on your hardware you're just not serviced. Admit it (I hate to admit it myself) RH is most supported, in case of problems you'll have more luck finding help as it just happens to be the most widely used distro.

When I borwse the problems here I can't help but noticing a LOT of mandrake problems.... proportinally much, given the use of Mandrake.

I may be wrong. Just my 2cts. Suse 's the best, RH a (close) second.

Oh - and the comments about RH not letting you choose packages during install is plain WRONG!

As said, just my 2 (Euro) cts
Tom

Definitely Mandrake for newbie.

futurist 06-12-2003 07:24 PM

mandrake is good enough, nicer screen design.

Mojojo 06-12-2003 08:02 PM

Since Mandrake 9.1 i've been windows free redhat 9.0 suxx "just my opinion" if you choose redhat go with 8.0 or 7.2.Redhat 9.0 was easier to install on my system but i only ran it for a month and spent most of my time in mandrake. Like the others say it depends on what you use it for. And what type of system you have.

Half_Elf 06-12-2003 09:23 PM

RedHat = Mandrake and Mandrake = RedHat... they are the same. Mandrake was created from RH source code, so don't expect a big difference.

BOOOOOOO!!!! Mandrake sucks!!!!

just kidding...there is no right answer. I prefer RH over Mndk, but it is for silly reasons and now, I believe that Mdk has ntfs resizer packed in which could be handy for the new user. Either way you can't lose, only Bill Gates loses!

Honestly enough, I have found RedHat 8.0 with KDE is the best way for n00bs to hop from Windows. Once you get in the swing of things with it, it navigates and functions a great deal like Windows (only without the enormous suck power of MicroShaft Winblows).

But it really is true that you should try them all and see which one YOU like best. But one thing I CAN assure you of, is steer clear of the horrific distro known as Caldera, and if you are a n00b, you are a sitting duck with Debian.

Hope this steers you in the right direction.

I tried to install Mandrake 9.1 on two (very) different PCs and they both showed the same problems.

It took about 35 seconds for it to check each user's password when they logged in. That wasn't a good sign, and from there on in it was nasty.

I slapped RH 9 on the both and they worked firtst time, no issues, no problems. Detected very different sets of hardware with no probs and away we go.

I'd say that during the install with RH you have as much flexibility as you do with Mandrake with regards to selecting packages etc, as long as you go for the custom setting.

futurist 06-13-2003 07:41 AM

Mandrake is perfect.

Zohra\ 06-13-2003 10:26 AM

well i guess everyone seems to be divided, i really dont know what to choose, but i dont think there is much difference so i will go with mandrake jsut because i fell in love with their outlook.

well as a newb you can't really go too wrong with either one. they are very similar, and both will have good points and bad points depending on your hardware and other factors.

the one other point i would make is that redhat somehow seems to make it easier to learn linux, while mandrake is so windows-like that as a newb one can tend to get stuck in doing everything through a GUI. ultimately the decision to "turn off" the gui and get your hands dirty with the CLI is yours no matter which one of them you choose, but IME i found that easier to do with redhat.

Drogo 06-13-2003 11:57 AM

They are similar but, On my opinion RedHat its better :)

senthil 06-13-2003 05:07 PM

I had used only RH until its version 8. Then tried to install RH 9 but never could get the X run only laptop. Even with older versions I had choose generic video drivers but on 9 nothing helped. So tried Mdk9.1 and works fine. So just stuck to it.

I like both equally; no big difference if you work on command line mostly. In some aspects RH was better and in some Mdk. Overall you won't go wrong with either.

BTW - I still run my server on RH 7.3

Cheers,
Senthil
