Is there a reliable CD audio ripping solution for Linux?

I have several hundred CD Audio discs I'd like to rip to flac files, but having a tough time finding a consistently reliable ripping option for Linux.

I have tried
Rhythmbox
Goobox
VLC
abcde

All work once or twice then stop reading the next disc inserted into the drive. This is on three PCs, running Ubuntu or Mint.

Currently I'm finding the only consistently reliable solution is to boot into Windows and use one of the many options available on it.

Any suggestions whatelse I might try on Linux to get a better outcome?

Thanks

I ripped all mine with abcde and had no trouble at all. What you describe is real weird, do you get any error messages?

are you sure the songs aren't on youtube already?

Just checked again on abcde - it seems to hang when trying to read the CD. Bear in mind these are all carefully stored CDs going back to the 80s.

I intervene and manually eject the CD. abcde reports
Code:

[WARNING] something went wrong while querying the CD... Maybe a DATA CD or the CD is not loaded?
[WARNING] Error trying to calculate disc ids without lead-out information.

The same CD on the same hardware reads OK when I boot into the Windows partition.

Weirdly, if I reboot the Linux OS the first couple of CDs will process OK. Then on the third or fourth that above errors return.

Frustrating....

Anything in dmesg when it hangs?

Might see if you can find a usb cd reader to test. I'd get the feeling it is more of a mechanical issue. I'd think one or two disc's could be bad but it's usually easy to hold up to light to see if any defects.

I use k3b to rip audio CDs. Easy and reliable.

You did not say what OS version you have, but here is a reference for several ripping tools.

You might also try an update of the OS, just in case an earlier update got something out of sync between software packages.

I'm using four PCs, two using Ubuntu 20.04, one Ubuntu 20.04 server, and one Linux Mint. OS's are always up to date.

I'm getting the same outcomes across four PCs. It is unlikely all would have faulty DVD/CD devices. They are all burners, of course.

Thanks. I forgot the bleeding obvious. Will check, but it seems that the software doesn't refresh the disc read on insertion. I've worked out I can force that from the file manager (nemo).

This is above my paygrade, but it does look ominous. The bit after the TIMEOUT at the end is when I force a manual eject of the disk.

Note that although there's a TIMEOUT the AUDIODISC link lists in nemo.

Strange days....

Can we assume these are store bought CD's?

Gad 02-28-2021 03:22 AM

Good question, copied CD/DVD's tend to get damaged over time even if not used at all

m.a.l.'s pa 02-28-2021 03:22 AM

Not sure if this would help the OP, but I use Asunder now. In the past I was mainly using K3b.

Emerson 02-28-2021 04:11 AM

Is this SATA controller in AHCI mode?
