I ripped all mine with abcde and had no trouble at all. What you describe is real weird, do you get any error messages?
Just checked again on abcde - it seems to hang when trying to read the CD. Bear in mind these are all carefully stored CDs going back to the 80s.
I intervene and manually eject the CD. abcde reports
Code:
[WARNING] something went wrong while querying the CD... Maybe a DATA CD or the CD is not loaded?
[WARNING] Error trying to calculate disc ids without lead-out information.
The same CD on the same hardware reads OK when I boot into the Windows partition.
Weirdly, if I reboot the Linux OS the first couple of CDs will process OK. Then on the third or fourth that above errors return.
Might see if you can find a usb cd reader to test. I'd get the feeling it is more of a mechanical issue. I'd think one or two disc's could be bad but it's usually easy to hold up to light to see if any defects.

I'm getting the same outcomes across four PCs. It is unlikely all would have faulty DVD/CD devices. They are all burners, of course.
Thanks. I forgot the bleeding obvious. Will check, but it seems that the software doesn't refresh the disc read on insertion. I've worked out I can force that from the file manager (nemo).
