Someone already recommended this and like I said, I get an error when trying to load ActiveX controls, and that error is not solved yet, or at least I didn'f find any solution to it. Please read post #12 to see what error I get. I would appreciate if anyone could solve that.

Seems to be a wine bug...
Try this:

Remove old .wine dir

Not sure if this is required. Might try skipping this one step if you want...
Edit /usr/share/wine/wine.inf to remove these lines (in the FakeDlls section):
shlwapi.dll
winhlp32.exe,winhelp.exe
crypt32.dll


run winecfg

Apply the ie6_overrides.reg file from the appdb page: "wine regedit ie6_overrides.reg"

Acquire mfc40.dll (You can get it from here: http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?mfc40
and place in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32

Install DCOM98.exe. From here:

Everybody gave you plenty of solutions. I do have it installed and runs OK although I do not need it.

1. Crossover/Wine is the easy approach and it will work as a Linux application. I believe is the way to go. Go to the crossover/wine mailer lists and they will help you with any difficulties you may have in the installation. You do not need to install window which if you are using XP you may have license issues to install it.

2. Virtuallization. I do have VMware workstation, it works very well although ain't cheap and for one only program may not be worth it.

3. qemu is excellent and free. Depends on your distro but there are binaries for many distributions. kmenu is the accelerator but if your system is relatively fast and the only thing you need is the IE you may not need it.

In both VMware and qemu you need to install windows. EULA is still a problem with XP if you want to use the same version. Of course after you have the virtual machine setup you can copy it or back it up. OTOH if you are using a multiboot computer with win and linux VMware workstation can use the present installation to create the virtual machine

Finally you should have a way to access your bank without the IE

Everybody gave me plenty of solutions that didn't work for me. If they work just fine for you this doesn't mean they will work the same way for me. I stated before the error message I get and I'm not the only one who gets it. Looks like it's a wine bug and it' not solved yet.
I tried to set Firefox and konqueror to identify themselves as IE without success.
I will install today vmWare player and probably it will work just fine, I see no reason for it not to work. I'm downloading it right now.

You could always change your bank!! ;) The easiest way i found to getting IE to work on linux was Crossover office. Works pretty well. VMWare is awesome, but as you would expect, it slows down your computer somewhat when 2 OS's are running!! The crossover office route is definitely the one that i would persevere with at the moment. IE is in their list of supported software and it runs Microsoft Office really well, and i don't care what you say, Office is better than open office. Good Luck. Graham

Here is the thing: they pay me from my job by sending me the money to an account at THAT bank. And here in Romania I have 2 choices: either take the money from that bank without any fees, either send the money to another bank and pay some fees. I don't know if you have to pay fees for this in your country... :)

I will try crossover too... I know vmWare slows you down, but if you use it just to check your bank, it takes you max. 5 minutes, so I don't mind. :)

As for OpenOffice vs. Microsoft Office, I don't actually write anything in either one, I just update my CV once in a while, and I don't care which one I'm using to read some documentation I found on the internet in that format.

Read my first post and you will see why I want to do this. And no, this doesn't help.

Vmware server is free (as in beer), and it works fine for the sort of stuff you want to do, if you have a copy of windows around. I use it just to play poker online with sites that aren't linux friendly. There should be another way to do it. Have you tried win4lin or crossover office ? I think both cost a few bucks though. They have trail versions I think, so you can see if it works. You might want to try IE 5.5, as you don't need the cvs version of wine, a slightly older version will work, but make sure you have the correct version of wine, and of IE.

P.S. Oh, vmware supports a suspend feature, so it doesn't take all that much time, as long as you have a fairly recent machine, have enough ram, and never shut down you virtual machine. Oh, looks like IE is supported in wine, but really only versions 5.5 and 6 work, so make sure you have the right version of IE and the right version of wine. This might be a little bit of help.

Crossover office may be the easy way to go. There is a trial version with all the features. The price is not too high.
VMware player will not do it. You still need the a virtual machine that you can make with VMware workstation which you have to buy. Qemu is free an it is excellent. I have been able to run all versions of windows and dos under quemu. Qemu is very easy to install and run.

Vmware server is free(as in beer), and works to install a desktop. I know, I have it installed on Kubuntu 6.06. I didn't pay anything for it, and it's a completely legal install. Not a trail version either. They know the free vm's are catching up, and they want market penetration.

P.S. I still think wine or changing the user agent ID is the way to go, but having a vm around is useful anyway.
