instant messenger
Does anyone know a program such as AIM that lets you talk to your friends for linux?

GAIM
|
Well gaim is prolly the choice for the majority because it handles all the protocols such as MSN, AOL, and I don't even remember what else. I like to use Kmess or AMSN, but that is just cuz the only protocol I use is the msn one. It is a matter of preference, if you use msn then I would say AMSN is really nice and so is Kmess (for KDE).
Link for AMSN http://amsn.sourceforge.net/ Link for Kmess http://kmess.sourceforge.net gaim is prolly already installed on the system but the new version is a lot nicer... |

GAIM sucks...NO file transfer... ANd I do not know of any IM on Linux
that supports Sound or Video....................dratssssssssssssssssssss Hope that helps... |
file transfer, what do you need that for? Just email the file. Gaim is good though.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I went back to aim.com and this time I found that they do support linux. I installed it and it works great. Thanks!

Kopete!
It kinda cute and inegrates well with Kde.... assuming you use Kde :) |
If they had trillian fully linux-ready that'd be my choice, but until that day I think I'll stick with gaim
|
Gaim does support file transfer. It also looks nice, and will properly integrate with your desktop, so I'd recommend it over the "official" client (nobody uses it).
|
indeed. gaim has file transfer. and trillian can be run with wine.

Does anyone know if yahoo has something for Linux?
MSN and AOL are working great for me! Thanks guys! |
One other question - how would I create a desktop short-cut for the executable file for the msn messenger, using gnome...
I would like to click on an icon, which executes the .amsn file. (kinda like windows - I know lol) |
i cant get trillian to run right under wine. i installed with crossover office, but i have some issues. for example the handles on the windows dont exist...its pretty laggy....and i cant veiw my buddy list...howd u guys get around it?

I'd go for Kopete. You can have pretty much any account, and it's pretty flexible with a whole bunch of things. If you're using KDE, it's the one to go for. If not, GAIM should keep you happy, generally. You'll want to get a newer version since the older ones don't support Yahoo accounts properly, for various reasons.
