Well gaim is prolly the choice for the majority because it handles all the protocols such as MSN, AOL, and I don't even remember what else. I like to use Kmess or AMSN, but that is just cuz the only protocol I use is the msn one. It is a matter of preference, if you use msn then I would say AMSN is really nice and so is Kmess (for KDE).
Link for AMSN http://amsn.sourceforge.net/
Link for Kmess http://kmess.sourceforge.net
gaim is prolly already installed on the system but the new version is a lot nicer...

file transfer, what do you need that for? Just email the file. Gaim is good though.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I went back to aim.com and this time I found that they do support linux. I installed it and it works great. Thanks!

If they had trillian fully linux-ready that'd be my choice, but until that day I think I'll stick with gaim

Gaim does support file transfer. It also looks nice, and will properly integrate with your desktop, so I'd recommend it over the "official" client (nobody uses it).

One other question - how would I create a desktop short-cut for the executable file for the msn messenger, using gnome...
I would like to click on an icon, which executes the .amsn file.
(kinda like windows - I know lol)

I'd go for Kopete. You can have pretty much any account, and it's pretty flexible with a whole bunch of things. If you're using KDE, it's the one to go for. If not, GAIM should keep you happy, generally. You'll want to get a newer version since the older ones don't support Yahoo accounts properly, for various reasons.
