DivX in linux.
 

Does anyone know where can ALL the libraries needed to watch a DivX movie in Linux? I keep downloading movie watching programs and I keep being asked for libraries that I do not have. WHICH and WHERE are all theese libraries?

Yes, downloaded that. Just that it might need some libraries I do not have. (I am using the Internet elswhere and I will have to get home to test it). Does it not require some libraries that are not present in a RedHat8 installation?

mplayer brings most of it's own libraries with it, as it personalises them to suit it's needs. i'm sure you won't need more than those two...

redhat can't distribute any divx packages as it infiringes the licensing laws afaik

Yes, figured RedHat couldn't distribute DivX utils. But it's a bit annoying that it does not have MP3.

Distros seem to have a problem with putting codecs on their cd's.In that case it's the win32 codecs - redhat doesn't even include mp3 decoding anymore.
THEY SURE AS HELL DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ADVERTISING THAT MULTIMEDIA -whatever that is - WORKS OUT OF THE BOX.

I think the libraries were somehing like SDL. I've now found SDL MPEG Player Library (SMPEG) which I hope will work. Downloading now... testing later.

you don't need sdl at all, it's listed as a dependency for completeness, but you would be advised not to use it anyway, just force the rpm install with "--nodeps" if that is the only one missing.

I finally managed to solve the problem with Mplayer. It required LibPNG and zdlib to work. I still can't install the GUI, though, because it cannot find libPNG which I installed (to make it install even WIHTOUT the GUI). Keyboard should do for know.

You need the libpng-dev files too,check if you have those installed.

I believe mplayer comes with a script that will copy all the relevant win32 codecs which it can find in your MS-Windows install.

You will also find packages on the internet which contain all the win32 codecs you will ever need (certainly all the ones which xine can use, this is what I have).

If it is just DivX you want they you may want to download the Playa from DivX.com (they do a Linux version), it is still alpha but it works okay for me, it is the only player under Linux which supports divx5 (AFAIK).

that's not ture, mplayer has supported ALL divx formats for a long time now.

Hmmm... DivX.com - let me just take a look there!
