Can't get wirless to work

Ubuntu 16.04

Wireless quit connecting on HP Laptop but can still be seen by iPhone.

I previously turned off "disable secure boot" which solved this for about a year. I don't see "disable secure boot" in the Bios now.

And how do I get my computer to scan for new wifi networks?

BW-userx 01-25-2018 03:29 PM

Code:

sudo ifconfig
look for your wifi card and look for the key word UP or DOWN
here is a how to wifi command line

it is not showing a wifi nic
unless your system uses eno1 for wifi and not wlan0 ..read the links to get the commands to check and bring up your system.

ferrari 01-25-2018 05:02 PM

Have you check to see if wireless is disabled? First thing to check is wireless switch, or more often via Fn key.

The rfkill utility can also be useful here...
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/.../rfkill.8.html
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...#Rfkill_caveat

ferrari 01-25-2018 05:05 PM

Network hardware and driver details could be useful...
Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

BW-userx 01-25-2018 05:09 PM

and oops their is 'rfkill list' to see if it is being blocked.

(nm someone else brought it up, just caught that, after post)

Check that there is a driver loaded for your Broadcom wireless device. The command I gave was designed to only spit out the first couple of lines.

To get first 3 lines do
Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 net
or just do this and look for the output block pertaining to your wireless device.
Code:

lspci -nnk

Ubuntutututututututu How to install broadcom drivers.
https://askubuntu.com/questions/5586...reless-drivers

ferrari 01-25-2018 05:42 PM

Yep, no driver loaded. Refer to Ubuntu guide as BW-userx has linked to.

ferrari 01-25-2018 05:53 PM

Actually, this guide may be better
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...Driver/bcm43xx

In particular, for the Broadcom STA Wireless driver (Proprietary)...
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...Proprietary.29
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Wi...ng_STA_drivers

ferrari 01-25-2018 05:58 PM

I'm not an Ubuntu user, but I note that the Broadcom readme file mentions that a pre-compiled driver exists...
Quote:

PRECOMPILED DRIVER
-------------------
Some distros (Ubuntu and Fedora at the least) already have a version of
this driver in their repositories precompiled, tested and ready to go.
You just use the package manager to install the proper package. If
its available for your distro, this is usually an easier solution. See
the end of this document for further discussion.
so perhaps all that is needed is to follow the instructions they give here
Quote:

Ubuntu:
------
Go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers
Choose the Broadcom STA wireless driver
Activate

Sometimes the driver does not show up in the Hardware Drivers choices. In
this case, try reintalling the driver from the GUI or shell like this:

From the GUI:
Package Manager (System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager). Click the
Reload button in the upper left corner of Synaptic to refresh your index then
search for and reinstall the package named bcmwl-kernel-source.

From the shell:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install bcmwl-kernel-source

In either GUI or text case, after reinstalling, reboot your machine.

Now go back to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers
and you should see the driver enabled and working.

Perhaps you guys can help me through this.

I did this to start it off. What do I type into terminal next?
