What firmware? Do you mean BIOS, or some other device? Each is different, each will upgrade differently, and some can only be reported on from the reboot/POST screens at boot time. Again, post details or no one can help you. The dmidecode utility can give you some information, and it has a man page you can read. Google even has lots of information too...did you look there? Putting in "get firmware level in Linux" shows you:

The dmidecode command can display the system firmware level.
