Announcing a new site in BETA - AndroidQuestions.org

I'd like to let everyone know that a new site that we have been working on is now in BETA. Please welcome http://www.androidquestions.org/ to The Questions Network family of sites. Note that if you have an account here at LQ, you already have an AQ account. The AQ site is running the next generation platform that will power LQ at some point in the future, so we're very interested in feedback and comments. If you have a suggestion or feedback, visit http://www.androidquestions.org/thre...dQuestions.org and let us know. If the feedback relates to LQ in any way, feel free to post in this thread. Keep in mind that the site is still in BETA and as such registration for AQ itself is currently disabled, meaning only LQ members can participate at this time. After we're sure everything is stable and working to our satisfaction, we'll open up registration over there. I'd like to thank david_ross for his help and dedication in getting this project going.

Welcome, Android Questions!

Looks good Jeremy. :)

Well designed and nice color scheme. And round curves here and there make the site more appealing. I though that LQ could not be made better with nice colors and well placed menus and easy to navigate. But it seems AQ would make me think again and LQ with those colors would look nice too.

Personally I like the look and feel of LQ better than AQ.

Just one more piece of evidence that Android is barely Linux any more :P

Hi,

It's working over here without problems. From time to time I got the database errors too here on LQ. As indicated by Jeremy most of the time it coincided with me trying to access LQ when a DB backup was running and thus resulting in that error. Try again after a minute or so and you'll most likely find it working.

Kind regards,

Eric

Eric is indeed correct. We're working to make backups a little more transparent, but you may notice 30 second or so issues between 2-4am LQST in the meantime.

Works for me! No database errors, and it looks good too.

Good move to go for a new look on a new site - may help prevent me from posting Android items in the wrong forum! ;)

And a timely move too; this comes to you from 'My First Android' - a cheap Tosh NC100 with 2.2 upgrade.

I've just been on this on my G1 - That is what all this is about, isn't it?

Suggestions:
1. Trim the top page drastically. Here's what I see at any acceptable zoom
Androidquestions.org banner - 1 screenful (long).
Login box & Google ads/links 1/3 screenful
"Welcome to aq" notice - over 1 screenful
Please note (about registration) 1/3 screenful
Remaining header stuff - over 1/2 screenful
That's over 3 screenfuls of crap to scroll past.

2. I would try to get user & stats on the same line as the subject, and use a wider text width underneath for the post.

3. Remove the 'quote' option in a reply. With those headers, and a long quoted question or reply, I'd run out of memory on my G1 :-(.

4. A more normal interface for pc users would be helpful, if you can discriminate.

5. The basic color scheme is OK, despite the fact that the green is sad. It must have taken a lot of effort to get such an unfortunate green, but I wouldn't have tried that hard to mess the page up. Go darker on the green. The beige/mustard brown comes over very well indeed.

6. I've posted on a memory problem to give it something to work on while everyone's still looking in.

A couple comments:

* The style and layout issues should be covered by the fact that in the very near future the site will have a mobile interface and a native mobile app.

* The two colors are actually the official android colors. While most people seem to like the color scheme, a small minority seems to strongly dislike it.

Thanks for the feedback.

AQ looks fine to me.

frieza 06-06-2011 02:12 PM

i think the color scheme looks fine, though i think LQ could use the rounded corners and the sleek look but the LQ color scheme is fine as it is, nice job on the new site, makes me wish i had an android based system ;).

comparing stackoverflow and sister sites with LQ, i find it easier to separate signal from noise on SO.

Using windows fonts like calibri and verdana is not good idea imho. Looks ugly here on kde, I had to deactivate them as I couldn't imagine anyone would use them on a webpage ...
