I'm surprised at Ubuntu winning, it goes to show Distrowatch's stats do not represent reality at least here in LQ land.

The biggest winner seems to be LibreOffice which totally destroyed other nominees with over 81%. Well done.

I don't think Ubuntu would have done that well if not for Xubuntu and Kubuntu. Also, Xfce did really well coming in second I think considering it's not the featured desktop of most distros.

Compiz came in second for window managers. Next year, it probably won't be on the list.

I'm surprised Chromium didn't do better. I love Firefox's layout much better, but Chromium has always seemed so much faster to me.

This was a fun series of polls to vote in. The big side benefit was hearing about a few applications I hadn't heard of. For instance, XFE for file management, I'll be trying that out for sure.

After closing the polls LQ does _not_ sort the results by popularity. As far as the final results are concerned, the original sorting order is pretty much irrelevant. Even though I assume that this helps show how positions evolved compared to last year's results, I still feel that it makes more difficult to digest current year's results. What do you think?

Based on feedback, we will likely alpha sort the polls next year.

I would suggest to at least add a column that indicates the relative order of the choices. For example:
2. Nautilus 117 24.43%
1. Dolphin 118 24.63%
5. Konqueror 29 6.05%
3. Thunar 80 16.70%
4. Midnight Commander 50 10.44%

If you alpha sort or keep sorting as it is, it is very confusing to keep count which is 1st, 2nd, 7th.

No Arch, but, that's to be expected. Ubuntu has the easy and welcoming qualities everyone needs.

Don't worry about it - Slackware virtually tied for first as both a desktop and a server vs. Ubuntu and Debian. So Slack is the MCA winner for most versatile distro of the year. :)

Slackware too close to ubuntu ! :) settling with arch linux but now I am curious to see how good slackware is :D
