Video Card Not Detected
I did a fresh install of RH9 on an old PIII machine I have. Everything goes ok until it trys to boot for the first time after the install.
The video card I'm using is an old Diamond Multimedia Stealth 64. I get the following error messages on the screen: Can't start the X Server Would you like to view X Server output to diagnose? Log file: "/var/log/XFree.86.0.log", Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config" (WW)Warning: S3: No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:9:0)Found (From here it looks like it searches all of the PCI slots because there are numerous entries with just the BusId changed.) Fatal Server Error: No Screens Found ddcproibe returned bogus values Name: None ID: None Hsync: None Vsync: None I have tried running XFree86 -configure, but the screen justs goes blank. Thanks for any help! |
do 'XF86Config' Without the quote marks, try VESA, and also try S3 Generic Drivers As Diamond Video Cards Are Built On The Same Tech I Guess...

I did try XF86Config. It returns the same error messages as before. How do I try VESA and S3 Generic?
I did run ddcprobe and my card was returned correct, however the monitor shows as no screen. It was detected along with the video card right during the install process. |
ok, for your sake i'll give you every instruction i've followed, my video card is an S3 Savage4 so i use VESA at the moment:
<---START---> xf86config <ENTER> Now you choose a mouse! i chose 9. <ENTER> y for the next one just press <ENTER> Keyboard- i chose 1 <ENTER> same goes for language! for the next two press ENTER and NO. now to start monitor, press ENTER Select: 10 <ENTER> Select: 4 <ENTER> Press enter for the identifier bit for "DO YOU WANT TO LOOK AT THE CARD DATABASE?" Press Y <ENTER> now Select/Type 0 for VESA (if it doesn't work then select 375 for S3 Generic) <ENTER> Now Press Enter, Now For Video Memory, Specify It Yourself... Press ENTER for the identifier, now, leave the video modes as they are, and press 4 <ENTER> choose 4 for colours to be safe, and press ENTER now, press Y for writing the file... ...tell me how it goes... |
<---END--->
! |
This method just returns a blank screen for me. For $25 I replaced the video card and everything seems to boot up correctly.
Thanks for your help. |
