The kernel easter egg hunt!

Redhat 9 i am using, yes.

ATI video card drivers i am installing, yes.

Problem with install of ATI drivers, no.

BUT there is supposed to be a /usr/src/linux directory. I have /usr/src and thats it. Where is the linux kernel directory at in RH9:Pengy:

You have to install the kernel source. In redhat, there should be a kernel source rpm. I haven't used redhat for quite a while, but on mandrake you could use the "urpmi" command to install rpm's. The package is on your installation disks somewhere.

you probably don't have kernel source installed, install it from your fedora cd

yup. man this is retarded. I looked through several books and sites on RH9 and it's supposed to be there. So pretty ticked at it at this point. Since i gotta install the source, can i go out and install 2.6 kernel instead of 2.4? I found an rpm for it, but will i have the same problem with that directory not being found?

Are you sure redhat's not installing the source somewhere else? Try searching for "linux" or "linux-2.4.*" either in a file manager or with "locate" on the command line.
I wouldn't monkey around with the 2.6 source unless you want to try compiling and running it. If you aren't actually running the 2.6 kernel, the source is no good.

Thats a good idea. I shoulda thought of that. Oh well, I got home from work lastnight and my system has removable HDD racks so that i can swith HDs whenever i want. Anyways, i put in my RH9 drive and i got the ever-famous no OS found error. I did'nt make a boot disk. ><

SO, in process of installing SuSE 9. I bought the distro of amazon and it comes with all the user and admin guides i need, so i figured i'll give it a shot and see if i have better luck. SuSE can install RPMs, so that makes it about the same operation that i was attempting on RH9. Thanks for the advice though :D
