suse 8.2 pro and cable modem dont like each other?

I really don't have a clue so I have looked through search and cuold not find anything that helped me. I have an internal ethernet connection on the motherboard. I have a scientific atlanta modem and my windollers computer works fine thru the usb hub(different and older computer altogether). I cannot however even get the suse to comunicate with the modem at all It may as well not be connected. I cannot find ifconfig and or any other program files people talk about. so now I beg for help like I was 5 if you can, thank you very very very much even if you try to help me.

I'm just bumping and would also like to say the more I get into this OS the more I think it rules. I just wish I was more computer savy but I'm working on that.:D

I have already seen and done that particular piece of advice. It did get me all of nowhere but I guess its one more thing I can check off. When I originally installed the OS I had the modem connected via a usb port and the light for the pc (there are 4 total, power,pc,data, cable) was solid (it normally flashes) so I guess there was some sort of signal there but it was not going through. I switched to the ethernet cable and got nothing (no light at all for pc), even after restarting the computer. neither way got me to the net though. I will buy a router or whatever I have to to get it working. but it seems to me like something is switched off and needs some formatting but I don't know how or where to start.

A personal router will do the trick ;-)
