Soundcard or settings not working for headset

Needing help troubleshooting a problem. I connected a headset (1/8 inch phone jacks) to my computer and had no problem using it for some time. Then my son used my system and either accidently broke the connector where the phone jack connects, or altered the settings so that now I can only hear through the headphones; the microphone does not work properly. I know it's not the headset because I can connect it to my other computer which uses XP and it works fine.

I have SuSe 10 and Alsa working. The soundcard (if you can call it that) is built-in to the motherboard. ASUSTeK M5455 PCI AC-Link Controller Audio Device.

I have attempted to make the correct settings in ALSA, but with no success, as I know very little about adjusting ALSA. I'm close to just purchasing a new soundcard, but would rather learn that a minor adjustment in the software would solve the problem.
Anyone have any troubleshooting suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

So basically, the sound is coming through but not going out? If it is an alsa setting, try checking the settings in 'aumix' or 'alsamixer' or 'kmix' etc, to make sure the mic isn't muted. You can then store the settings with the command 'alsactl store', as root.
