DAVE666, if you still have questions about the original issue you are welcome to post them. The way software packages are managed on GNU/Linux can indeed take some time to "get" when one is just getting started. That said, please refrain from making any more off-topic posts, this isn't your blog and it certainly isn't a chat room. At this point, I don't see any reason why this thread should be closed, because as long as everyone makes an effort to get it back on-topic there is still hope for it.

I would like it closed as it is just going to turn into a joke...As i am sure you see.
Anyway it is resolved and no input is needed...
I will attempt in the future to not take things so personally.
Maybe as a moderator you could tell M D that his approach was wrong,i admit my response to him was in haste,in a pissed off frame off mind..I am learning that handling these issues while pissed off does not work... Maybe he (MM)could have offered a simple, response indicating that i miss read his intentions..end of story..His angry response only proved that he likes to take shots at people, likes to be little the "Newb and Dope" If thats what this forum condones i wont be here long.
We are in the Newb section are we not? All the old timers out here,do you not recall some of the stupid questions, the stupid ways you handled things when you started.?
I did respond with sarcasm to him because he could have offered advice after his joke...Maybe taken a more polite route. That is all.
Maybe i was wrong for taking things personally...It is just that being out here trying my ass off to learn, trying to forget XP is a chore!
I do not have a lot of time,i have children,i am not in University but in life University, have a full time job, trying to learn a new way.At times this gets very frustrating, especially when the kids want back on the PC and you have to tell them that you F----- it up! And you get told "told ya Linux sucks"or "My computer teacher said it sucks"..At times one becomes extremely frustrated..
I am learning some patientce as well as a new OS...Linux is another world compared to MS,its similar in ways and getting easier every time i screw something up and learn...Maybe old timers could be a little more patient and refrain from attacking newbs..Maybe everyone can remember the days before they became programmers..and recall that while they were learning they were also impatient and frustrated.
I dropped MS and am glad i did...I am learning Linux and glad for that..I found this forum and am very glad for that.
My mistakes on Linux and out here are allowing me to learn.
Thats why i am here.

Oh, I see. Well, while on the subject of gstreamer plugins, I would like to say that you might be interested in a meta-package called ubuntu-restricted-extras. It'll install a crapload of plugins and codecs which will allow you to watch all sorts of media. For more info about this, click here.

True. But be careful with this. Take for example the RealPlayer10GOLD.bin file. If I double-click it I'll get a "No application suitable for automatic installation is available for handling this kind of file" error message. Depending on your level of security-awareness, this might or might not be a good thing. Personally, I would NOT change this behavior, as I feel more comfortable knowing that it'll be tough to accidentally execute some miscellaneous (and potentially dangerous) binary. In order to execute the RealPlayer10GOLD.bin file I'd actually need to open a terminal, make the file executable, and then execute it:
Code:

chmod +x RealPlayer10GOLD.bin

./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin

Thanks....

DAVE666, I empathize with you, but you are once again venting on the thread - which has effectively cancelled-out my attempt to get it back on topic. Look, what happened here earlier is simply miscommunication IMHO - you need to let it go and move on. I honestly don't believe you were under attack but I understand how you might have interpreted it that way.

Your question was/is NOT stupid, in fact it's a very important one as it can have deep security implications to it, which I tried to illustrate in my previous post. I was hoping you might be able to put-aside your emotions for a second, at least for the benefit of other newbies. Perhaps you can't, and you will continue to vent on this thread until there is no choice but to close it and issue you an infraction for consistently disregarding a moderator's requests.

Your request for thread closure has been received. This forum's moderators will have a look at it shortly. BTW, I have seconded your request, in hopes that closing this will provide you with the serenity you need in order to move on and stuff.

Thanks.
I hope everyone can learn to be a little more tolerant...From all of this.I have.
I am finished venting.
I have no hard feelings, and regardless of what M M meant ,its over.
Its difficult as i indicated above at times..
I solved another issue and learned a great deal.
Thanks for your patience and efforts to set things right.
Maybe you could share the security implications for me...I gather by allowing the wrong program to open a file i am allowing a potential threat to slip through the cracks?..The cracks that another program would have the cement in place ..correct?
Maybe if we can discuss this topic we do not need to close this?
Thank you.
