Problem opening programs..
 

I am unable to open any programs (downloaded)?...How do i make Synaptic Package Manager my default??
When i click on OPEN WITH OTHER APPLICATION,i come to the selections,and Package Manager is not one of them??..Only Abbi word processor etc which will not open it? It is Real player,i am attempting to open,well actually any programs i am currently unable to open as my default has been changed...
...I have taken the advice of others who suggested Real Player as being compatible?
How can i apply S Package Manager to open my programs?...I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO CHANGE MY DEFAULT FOR OPENING PROGRAMS IN XBUNTU???

You mean the .deb packages?
Those are not programs. - right click - open-with should do. I don't think synaptic is made to handle single packages though. you should use dpkg -i from the command line or something like gdebi-gtk, if you want a gui. I think gdebi-gtk is the gnome default.

I downloaded VLC music player,it wont open with any of the programs listed in the open with choices?? Is there a way to open it..The file is sitting on my desk top looking at me,driving me nuts:)

If you downloaded one through a web browser, then if you click on it, it should install it. Make sure its a .deb file though

Or you can use dpkg to install .deb file. In my PC, i cant double click on .deb file to install (like EXE file in Windows)

How might i open this file?
I click on it and it gives me the options to open it..However none of them open the program????? Well it only opens showing all the files? I want to run the program!

dpkg is a way to install it with command prompt. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dpkg

Just a question, why do you want to install real player

Because i am told it is the most compatable with Linux,several people have told me it is very compatable..?Which i do not know being new with Linux.....I have to change my default program opener,and i do not know how.?

I've noticed that you delete most of your questions once your problem has been solved. Stop doing that. The point in having a forum is that other users having similar problems to yours will find your thread through the search and fix their problems.

Try doing this in Xubuntu. Click in applications, then:

System -> Preferences ->Preferred Applications

MY guess is that you downloaded the tar.gz with the sources. Or you are trying to execute a script that is not set to be executable. Right-click and make it executable. Try to do everything with the package manager for the start. You are making your life way too hard by trying to compile something, or getting programs from alien sources.
Get m-player or vlc along with the m-player plugin for firefox, and install the gstreamer plugins and ubuntu restricted extras. All of them are available through synaptic.

Unless there is some reason that you absolutely need realplayer, I would suggest using mplayer, which if you google around a bit, there are some guides that show you how to install it
