PCMCIA Ethernet Card not recoginized

I've just "repurposed" an old HP omnibook 4150 with ubuntu 9.10. I am very new to the world of linux. Can someone take the time to walk me through the diagnostic steps to figure this out?

The ethernet card is a 3com 3ccfem556--apparently this is supported by an "ep driver"?

Here is the output from lspcmcia and lspci:

jimtino@jimtino-laptop:~$ lspcmcia
Socket 0 Bridge: [yenta_cardbus] (bus ID: 0000:00:04.0)
Socket 0 Device 0: [-- no driver --] (bus ID: 0.0)

01:00.1 Multimedia audio controller: Neomagic Corporation NM2200 [MagicMedia 256AV Audio] (rev 12)
jimtino@jimtino-laptop:~$

This is what happens when I type ifconfig up commands:

jimtino@jimtino-laptop:~$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
[sudo] password for jimtino:
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
jimtino@jimtino-laptop:~$ ifconfig eth0 up
eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

Thanks,

Jim

this is a very old note book you will have to go into setup (bios) and set up your pcimca card. while your in there set bios to none windows or none O/S.
I had the same problem. I believe I had to set my pcmcia slot to 16 bit in bios.
Then linux read and loaded the card. Unlike M$ linux does not run bios it only reads them.
good luck.
you may want to type dmesg and see if pcmcia is even being loaded.

OK, thanks. How do I disable M$ in the bios? Here's my output from dmesg:

please insert the card before starting linux. then type as root lspci and post it. lsmod and post it.
your dmesg should change and load the card earlier. From your dmseg you pushed the card in after linux had started. as root ifconfig eth0 up Then type as root ifconfig and post it.

Thanks so much for hanging with me on this one Drakeo. Here is the output from lspci, lsmod, ifconfig, and another dmesg dump.

please let me know if this is a ether net combo card. if so please give me the chip number on the card if it is a combo card please manually insmod the modules.
Quote:

# modprobe pcmcia
# modprobe 3c574_cs
# modprobe serial_cs
I want you to go into bios and find the pcmcia card socket and change the settings to what ever . there most likely is two or three settings. if this is a combo card 3com ethernet card and a modem let me know that.
I need to know the kernel and distro. open a terminal and type uname -a if you do not post that I will have to give up.
If this is a combo card written for windows we need to let linux load it the right way.
Quote:

we need to load the firmware for it. It most likley is there or needs to be installed but I have no idea what kernel or what distro.
