You don't say what version of Ubuntu, what fields aren't populated, or give any errors. Look in the /var/log/messages file when you try to connect, and see if there's anything that indicates there's a failure. Also, try to spell and write clearly...and some punctuation wouldn't hurt either...your question is very hard to read and follow. |
i thank yo very much for your speedy message the feilds un populated are as follows
network pin puk and although im not as wise in these matters i dont appreciate being spoken down to about and i will try and improve my spelling for all further posts thank you damon cook |

And if you think you're getting talked down to, oh well....if you want anyone to be able to understand what you're saying, you're going to have to talk/write clearly. One giant run-on sentence, no caps, etc., doesn't help. If you're even in grade school, those are things you should already know. |
i dont no what version of ubuntu iv got its the connected icon at the top of the screen. ive left clicked on it and edit connections and thats what comes up.
and i dont see the importance of correct grammar and and spelling as im typing quite fast, and im rushed to try and activate it as i have to be up for work at 430 in the morning 4 hours and counting so excuse me for being short tempered. and as for reading the documents theres nothing about linex and its pay as you go ive contacted o2 and there as much help as a chocolate teacup. |

This should pop up a window indicating the version. Quote:

then i feel i should apologise this is my first time ive ever used a forum and no very little of their functions.
i intend on staying on here and if there arises a problem that i have the answer to il have every intention of assisting with what information i have. Also to add to my info my linux ubuntu is version 9.04 the Jaunty Jackalope - released in April 2009. thats all the info i have on it if anymore info is required please ask im still eager to to help out where i can . |

if he's using gnome more than likely he is using the network-manager-applet.
can you open up a terminal and post the output of commands like lsusb, ifconfig -a |
dude uve just flew right over my head i can tell u exactly what ive done and the name gnome 2.26.1 ive got that on my system drop down.
ive got a drop down on the right hand top bar for all network connections if i right click on it and use the edit connections button and select mobile broadband and edit my dongle i comes up with somthing like this basic number [*99#] username [payandgo] password [pasword] advanced APN [payandgo.o2.co.uk] network [ ] pin [ ] puk [ ] |

|
have tried opening a terminal and entering both commands the first wasn't recognized and the second flicked up a load of data at me but no joy dongle was in and wouldn't activate at all.
|
Ok, those commands were for diagnostic purposes... ie you need to post the output: even (especially) if it seems to be an error.

Why can't you spell, punctuate, use capitals, or post a sensible question ? I'm worried about you. Maybe you need to get help from somewhere other than here (LQ). Perhaps schedule an early appointment with your doctor? |
No im not on drugs or drunk thanks and i was told to open a terminal and use the 2 commands i was told to.
As you can see Ive pasted the results of that diagnostic on here so can somebody tell me what im looking at or suggest another idea because im at a loss. |
sorry i never used a cell phone broadband service so this is new to me also.
i am not sure what 02 is (i assume some cell fone company ?) i see this page about vodaphone (are they the same thing ?) - http://www.howtoforge.com/vodafone_m...d_driver_linux i think you can get vodafone-mobile-connect-card-driver-for-linux from sourceforge. someone asked this before but i must ask it again -- are you sure that pin, puk, and network are not supposed to be supplied by your cell phone company ? |
O2 is a UK mobile / cell company
This might help: http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?...19cda23bb5a11c |
unfortunately no im not because o2 and yes they are a cell phone company are not supporting linux so wud not offer me any help, but the setup book showed a similar page setup for apple mac so its my thinking that those feilds puk, pin and network need occupying.
Il investigate the links you've both posted thank you very much for taking the time to read my problem and decipher what i was talking about and offering help. |
after reading some of the installation methods for o2 dongles on linux i have found that apparently the first time it must be activated on a windows system i thank everyone who's tried to help me in my endeavor
|
look dude...I am an aussie so will be blunter than most.
I have no problem that you do not start sentences with a capital but separate the sentences...you are looking for help ok? 1) fact....you do not need to activate on windows. I have a different dongle to you...but most are the same so let me explain it to you in windows (ms) style. in ms...insert modem....ms sees it first as a cd....and self extracts the drivers into ms system....you then disconnect thru the system tray....re-insert it and it becomes a modem. 2) Now in linux terms I call that a flip-flop. You can insert it and get information from it. You need to run some commands in a terminal. You need to install or run some software to connect to the net. so lets try something? open a terminal....I assume you know what ubuntu uses? insert modem run this command Code:
lsusb lsusb Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05c6:f000 Qualcomm, Inc. Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub The usb id is this bit.....05c6:f000 ...Yours will differ. Now run a command to flip it into modem mode Code:
eject /dev/sr1 (then repeat earlier command) the first bit did not change as its the manufacturer the second bit is the model 3) So using a linux web browser go to your isp for the o2 and register that device....your documents should tell this. 4) The you edit a file created by installing software called wvdial....and you need to run the command with root powers but for ubuntu that means putting sudo at front of command. Now I am not sure what your text editor is called...so navigate in ubuntu and look for it.....lets call it.."editor" so to get root powers you do this Code:
sudo editor 5) ring this o2 and tell them you are using windows and you just need some settings again......(yes we lie) or go to a wireless forum in the UK and ask there. so you know what values to put into that wvdial.conf 6) if you get registered and get the values you open a normal terminal and run wvdial.....and watch your modem....its lights should change after about 15 seconds to a constant light like red or blue or green ...depending on what strength radio signal it can get...like 2g or 3g or 4g....got the idea. 7) only if that all worked.....I can give you tips to automate process....but the deal is....you have to do some work....I can not register your modem= phone and I can not read your modem manual....so I assume you have installed sim card correctly....and I can not help you get the settings. stick with linux....you do not need ms....but you will have a learning curve ok leaping ahead here is how I automated mine http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/?tag=linux_U6T I used the aussie forum to find out what settings to use in wvdial.conf good luck |
