Unfortunately distros having a user friendly installation kit are usually the most hungry of memory as well.
At the moment I'm running slackware on my laptop (celeron 400: 64 MB Ram only; KDE).
May be slack is not the simplest starting point, but if you like and have some time to waste
it could be an option.
Vector Linux has a very simple installation method and is based on slack. I've tiried it for a while and it works fine with low performance computers
Hope this helps
Ciao

Please do not post the same thread in more than one forum. Picking the most relevant forum and posting it once there makes it easier for other members to help you and keeps the discussion all in one place.
