linux redhat 7.2

hey everybody,

I am very new to linux,I'm trying to install the red hat 7.2,I want to install it from a cd rom,but the error msg "I couldn't fine ur cd rom" or if I'm installing from local hardisk,"no iso9660 image",what is the problem ? and in which cd is the iso9660 images are?

Thanks,
Newbie,

iso9660 images are the files that you use to burn your CDs from (they are .iso files). They are downloadable from Red Hat (www.redhat.com).

I have the redhat 7.2 distribution, does it contain the .iso images. And the distribution is not a boxed set,it is a copy.

Did you burn the CD yourself? If so you should have the ISO files that you used to burn the CD. If not you need to either
a) obtain them from www.redhat.com or
b) obtain them from the person who gave you the CD's

Thanks paul for your help,I obtained the red hat 9.1 and begun intallation. What is the message "You have not defined a root partition (/) , which is required for installation for red hat linux to continue".I made partitions with Patitionmagic in windows, One Swap and Linux Ext2.What is missing ?

Thanks

you need to define that the ext2 permission should have be mounted as "/". You should be able to do this in the install program. You can create partitions in the install program using the "Disk Druid" option when running the install program (not recommended if using NTFS with Windows XP). I would recommend using ext3, as it is thought to be better and more reliable than ext2.

Hope that helps.

I am not sure about setting up dial-up connection as i have never needed to do this having a ADSL connection with router.

However in your menus under internet you should be able to select KPPP in the internet menu in the KDE menu in the bottom left and selrct your connection that you setup and click "connect".

Hope that helps

what is KDE menu ? and where is it ? and how do i connect ? please help ..

Ok, I assume you are using the KDE desktop as it is RH default.

Hmm, i assumed to much on the part of the KPPP thing, because i have never setup dial-up before. However I worked out how to do it. When you ran the internet configuration at the end it should have popped up a box with the title "Network Configuration" and listing your new connection. Select your device from the list and click "Activate" in the top right. Here is how to get to it:

At the bottom of the screen is the "taskbar" with some shorcuts and a list of the windows you have open, like on M$ Windows. On the far left is a button that has a "K" on it with a gear it has a small arrow in the top left. Click that. Now goto the "System Tools" menu and let it expand out, then goto "System Settings" then select the item labelled "Network configuration". Let it load then select your modem device and click activate.

OR you can use KPPP

At the bottom of the screen is the "taskbar" with some shorcuts and a list of the windows you have open, like on M$ Windows. On the far left is a button that has a "K" on it with a gear it has a small arrow in the top left. Click that. Now goto the "Internet" menu and let it expand out, then select the item labelled "Internet Dial-up tool (KPPP)", type the root password. Now click setup and add an account . Type in all the requested details and OK it all. Then you can select the account and click "Connect"

And about the internet menu,It doesn't have KPPP connection.

I'm beggining to loose hope..
