Installing Firefox 2.0.0.1 on Suse Linux 10
 

Hello All,

Sorry, I'm an YaNN (Yet another New Newbie); and like all the others, thoroughly confused!

I am trying to install the latest Firefox (2.0.0.1) onto my Suse Linux 10 Enterprise desktop machine which is installed through VMWare.

I have been folowing kb.mozillazine.org/Installing_Firefox#Linux

and get lost when I get an error of :-

mv: cannot overwrite directory `/usr/local/firefox'

as far as I'm aware I'm in the 'Admin' mode. I have typed 'su' and entered my password.

What am I doing wrong? I realise there is a thread for Installing Firefox on Linux, but it seems to be for v1.5 and looking at the info(which I have also tried) I'm still entering frustrationville on my ways towards goingtohitmycomputer town!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Firefox comes already compiled and ready to run. If you simply put the tarball on your desktop and right click on it, you should see "open with file roller" click that and you will get a windows listing the contents. On the menu bar is extract option. Press that and let it extract to your desktop. The results in the untarred directory is a working Firefox, which you could use right there if you want, but that's not tidy so.... Get on as root if you haven't already and go to where your old Firefox is. Check the permissions on the folder and make sure root has RWX Go to where your new Firefox folder is and open it up and select everything inside it. Directories files everything and copy all to the clipboard. Open your old Firefox directory and do a paste operation. You will have a warning about overwrites, simply OK it as many times as it pops up. Any plugins you have should be preserved since they will not be overwritten, but if they are anything but say java and flash you may find you need to update them.

You could also get Suse 10.2 which installs FF 2.0 anyway.
