How to get WG511v2 W/Card working on Linux/Ubuntu?
 

Hi! Although being a Radio Ham,I'm new to Computer World!
I decided to remove Windows from Dell Inspiron 4150 and use Linux/Ubuntu which works great! But my Netgear WG511v2 (China) Wireless Card which worked before doesn't now.
Is there an easy way to get this working or shall I get a different type of Card or USB?

One person commenting there says that those chinese cards use a different chip. As he mentions, you can find out by running "lspci -vv" on your terminal. Please do that and post the results. (to enter the terminal, go to your menu, applications->accessories)

Also, what version of ubuntu do you have?

Well that doesn't tell us anything we didn't know already, does it :rolleyes:

If my interpretation is correct, you're going to need to use your windows drivers, so have those handy. You'll also need to install something called ndiswrapper, that makes some windows drivers work on linux. You can find a guide for this here:

The guide only mentions support until 9.10, but it'll probably work on 10.04. The guide may look big and intimidating, but the ubuntu community is usually very newcomer-friendly so I think you'll manage :)
Also, it only mentions usb and pci cards, not pcmcia, but try it nevertheless.
