Hi there. Being completely fed up with Windows lately, I decided to install an alternative operating system on my laptop and check out the world of Linux. I downloaded and installed the latest release of Ubuntu (6.10) and things were working quite well until it came time to look at my wireless card.
I have a Netgear WG511 v2 (Made in China) on my Dell Inspiron 8000. I have searched these forums and seen a lot of information regarding this card.
I followed the directions in this article http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/..._06_LTS_Dapper
and it worked well until the point where i checked to see if my driver was installed (ndiswrapper -l). Instead of getting this message: 2802w driver present, hardware present, I get this: "2802w driver present".
Good - the driver has been installed, but the hardware doesn't seem to be recognized. No lights, nothing. I've tried both of the slots, but that didn't seem to help any.
If you have any suggestions as to how I can get the wireless card to work, please let me know.

I have the driver installed, but when i issue the command 'sudo modprobe ndiswrapper', I get the message 'FATAL: Error inserting ndiswrapper (/lib/modules/2.6.17-10-generic/kernel/drivers/net/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko): Invalid argument"

If you can help, please give me a shout!

Well, first of all, it appears that is the wrong driver. You'll want these

/ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/wg511v2_3_0.exe

But that won't even matter if we can't get your ndiswrapper working correctly. How did you install it? With Adept, or using make install? Have you updated your kernel since you installed ndiswrapper? Can you get to an ethernet connection where you would be able to plug your laptop in?

Thanks for the reply, however, being as impatient as I am, I went out and purchased a card that works with Linux right out of the box, the Netgear WG511T. Now, I'm stumped. The card works perfectly while I am at my office, but when I get home it doesn't work. I show a strong signal, but I'm unable to connect to the network. I figured at first that it might be a security issue, so I disabled security on the router. That didn't work. I spent all last night playing with it and had no success. I plan on asking for more help, once I'm at home this evening and can provide more details.

For now, make sure wireless security is off, then try to connect. If that doesn't work try to connect manually using iwconfig.

Hi All,

I also have the same problem. To be honest, I am a complete newbie to Linux and Ubuntu, but find it fascinating to the point that it is all I want to use.

I have the Netgear WG511 v2 (Made in China) Wireless PC Card and have tried to follow a collection of other linux users' posts, but to no avail. Would it be possible for someone to post a step-by-step instruction to make my card work - (BTW, I am not on the internet until I get my card working).

I have an old laptop which I am making good to learn Linux, but it seems pretty pointless from what I gather if there is no internet access. Many Thanks. EC.

BTW I also have the original CD with the card...
