FTP or HTTPS...
 

For 2 years now I’ve been messing up with Linux. My normal answer is: in case of a problem REINSTALL!

Well over 50 installations later, I’m very familiar with how to use the graphical install procedure of RedHat! :)

I know how to do some basic tasks like creating an account fetching e-mail, browsing the web, playing Gataxx ( I really like this game). But I want to go for some new challenges…

I have a little FTP server on my Win2000 PC. With no anonymous access.

I’d like to install something that could enable file exchange from my Linux server that would more secure and still allow me to manage accounts and rights.

So is it possible to do such a task with a http server in an ssl connection? Will the user be able to upload to my server, or is it just with ftp that you can upload to the server?

I would forget both and take a look at "scp".

I've looked at scp and it will help a friend of mine on his own project.

Here is my project:
My project is to make a site for all my traveling relatives and friends to upload their digital photos while they are away on vacation.

1- All photo must stay secure on the server
2- It needs to be easy to access from normal interface like IE in http or ftp.
3- Preferably sent in a secure pipe... thus ssl.

The problem is that the people updating my files and uploading to my server can be anywhere in the world. Thus mostly on MS systems. scp seems nice but my user aren't command-line friendly.

You could try running somthing like this on an https site:

Thanks everyone, I'm presently looking at linpha while my friend is looking at scp.

You might want to consider something like WinSCP. It's a got a nice "drag-n-drop" interface to scp.
