Cannot enter BIOS using Lenovo IdeaPad L 340

My laptop is a Lenovo IdeaPad L340

I have written to Lenovo 3 times to try to resolve the following problem and have had no reply.

I did a clean install of Kubuntu Linux 22.0.4 from a dvd to replace Kubuntu 18.0.4 and am now unable to enter the BIOS to change the Boot Order (or do anything else). I can boot into the new OS only if I use the Novo button then go to Boot and select the OS. If I select BIOS, a dialog box asks for a "System Password" which I don't have. I searched the web and found 2 recommended passwords: (*blank*) and (fwsetup). Neither works. The dialog does not accept non-alphanumeric characters. If I select OS from the Boot dialog it goes to GRUB and none of the commands boots the OS. I don't know if I have UEFI firmware as the relevant file is not listed in /sys/admin.

I need the proper "System Password" or whatever other procedure will get me into BIOS.Then I will reinstall Kubuntu 22.0.4. I would appreciate any help or advice you can give.
Sincerely, M.

Lenovo often have a small reset hole with a micro button to access the BIOS, use a paperclip to press it at start up

One can put a password on the bios, why don't you have it?

Thank you Fred and jamison,

I have tried the reset hole, Fred. It is called the "Novo button" and I have to use it each time I start the laptop. But I cannot enter the BIOS without the "System Password". That's what I need. I have finally received a reply from Lenovo but their solution is to install Windows 10 using a usb recovery key! No way.

jamison, I cannot put my own password on the BIOS as I cannot enter the BIOS. Otherwise I would do exactly that.

Thanks again. I would appreciate any info on where I can get the System Password.

Regards, Montazul

  • Did you buy the laptop new?
  • As far as I can tell the "system password" is the bios password?
  • Were you able or did you ever try to enter the bios before installing Linux?

If you or someone didn't put a bios password on and that's not the problem, then it supports windows and not Linux... so you might be stuck useing microcoughed, though you could ask around here

but probably start your own thread there like you did here?
