Black screen after grub menu
 

Getting a black screen after my grub boot menu.

The only recent change was an attempt to install new Intel® Graphics Performance Analyzers 2016. So that may be the culprit!

From experience I should have known better than to trust Intel software:)

I tried advanced settings and ran fsck.
no difference

So now I am booting off a live usb but need some troubleshooting steps.

2 questions
-What should I try next

- I have SystemBack installed but can find no tutorials on use, directed especially at novices

Have you tried nomodeset? This link gives a decent description of interrupting your GRUB boot to insert the nomodeset command. It has usually helped solve black screen issues for me.

There are any number of tutorials on using 'systemback' such as the link below. What exactly are you trying to do and what problems have you seen? Are you trying to create a restore point, create a bootable iso/flash drive?

A "black screen after Grub" suggests to me that the operating system is trying to throw up a graphic "entertainment screen" and is failing to do so. Try restarting the machine with this "graphical interlude" disabled (so that you can now see the messages whirling past), then study the startup-logs for both present and previous messages.

It is almost certainly the case that something went wrong with your recent graphic-layer software update.

One more thing: maybe, even though the screen is blank, the system underneath is starting up normally such that it might remove it in a few minutes. Or, it might start up such that with Ctrl+Alt+F4 (or somesuch) you can switch to non-GUI mode, log in, and look around. (In that case, dmesg should contain the smoking gun.)

eco_bach: It seems you have made at least two other posts related to this same problem (here and here).

So, rather than trying to chase you all over the board, why don't you pick just one of these threads and stick with it so that maybe someone can assist you. It will help a lot to keep all of your notes in one place, IMO.

The OP hasn't said if using a laptop or desktop, but I have found many times with a laptop that shining a flashlight on the screen will actually show the running desktop behind the blackness. In these cases, the LCD backlight is not activating, and nomodeset has been a good fix for me. There are other things besides the backlight though... this has just been most common in my experience.

reinstall, stick with the defaults, until you learn a little more about linux.
