!! SmoothWall Question !!

ok...here is my Senario:

I have a Wireless Access Point at Home which connect's to my friends house who has ADSL Internet. We are both on the 192.168.35.X IP RANGE and by this i can use his internet at my home. Now i want to setup a "SmoothWAll" Gateway.

Is it possible to do the following with Smoothwall:

I want Smoothwall to be a DHCP server to Assign IP's to all my PC's at home, and also asign the DNS so that they all can use the Internet. So Smoothwall will connect to the ACCESS POINT via a Ethernet Cable, and then get the inet throught the Access point. But now....must i have 2 NIC Cards? One for the Access Point Cable and one for the Local Private LAN which's connecte's to a HUB?

Example:

HOME PC's

PC 1 PC2 SMOOTHWALL GATEWAY
192.168.0.2 192.168.0.3 192.168.0.1(DHCP)
192.168.35.22 (Access Point Range for internet

I Think this is also called Ip Masquerading?

If this if possible, please Reply and HELP........

Yes, it's possible. Yes, you pretty much have the right idea... Two NICs in the SW box. The "red" NIC connects to the outside world; in your case, it's the WAP. The "green" NIC connects to the LAN, usually at a switch / hub. All your other computers connect to the switch / hub, also. They get to the internet by going through the switch / hub, connecting to the green NIC, and SW routes the traffic to the red NIC and the internet.

I use a SW box at the office at church to route three computers to the internet through dial-up. I'd guess it could also route through a NIC. Check << www.smoothwall.org >> if you haven't already. If for some reason it doesn't, I know ClarkConnect << www.clarkconnect.org >> will.

All programs can possibly be found to have a security vulnerability. The greater the number of programs, the greater possibility of having a vulnerable program.
A firewall like Smoothwall uses as small a set of programs as it can to greatly reduce the risk of unneeded programs offering bait to hackers. Since the firewall is your frontline to stop attacks you want it as secure as possible.
With some knowledge, any distribution can be set up to perform functions like Smoothwall. Not offering a broadside to hackers is part of the Smoothwall equation.
I have read of people adding programs to Smoothwall. (I don't know what method would be prefered.) In few instances would it be a terrific idea.

There is a good chance that an internal modem is a so called "Winmodem", meaning that it does not perform full modem functions with the hardware alone but requires software (often proprietary) to work.
Linux will work with some, but not all of these.
Finding the model or chipset of your modem and then visiting the
Linmodem site may help determine if you might have some luck.
No auto detection can often be bad news, but not always.

Floppy here

I've been using Smoothwall now for about
3 or 4 months

Yes Smoothwall will act as a DHCP and DNS Server
I just checked mine ( as I'm writing this )
and they are both working OK

You will need a NIC for your internet connection
another NIC for your network hub
and another NIC if you want a web server on a separate computer

However Smoothwall won't let you have 2 NICs
for your internal network
Smoothwall will only let you have 1 NIC for
each of your Red, Orange and Green zones

I doubt very much if you could install KDE on a Smoothwall
Its probably possible but not worth the hassle
to do properly
Smoothwall is maintained from a "safe" computer
in your green zone

There is plenty of documentation at the smoothwall site
read very carefully
they also have a forum at
http://community.smoothwall.org/forum/index

It is a very good out-of-the-box firewall
but it does have some issues
updating is a problem that regularly comes up in the forums
mine refuses to update and I dont know why
I'll just wait for version 2.1 or something
and just reload over the top

any other questions just ask

My smoothwall updates fine. The way that the updates work is when your on the web gui and you tell it to update it lauches another web browser to dl the new update then you just save it in a public place then you browse from the smoothie to the public dir and then hit update. This works real well for me.
