Setting up a VPn
Having just installed Linux Red Hat Fedora 2, one of our users now wants to be able to access the file server from home. We run a combi of WinXp and 98 clients, accessing the server (using Samba).
The home worker is running WINXP on his Dell laptop and has his own wireless network at home. He uses this laptop to connect to the LAN when he is at the office. We use BT Broadband to access the web and a Netgear Router. The Router provides the IP addresses to clients as they log on - the Server and the Router's ip addresses are fixed. To save installing a new NIC/Hub/Router etc., etc., I would like the user to be able to access the server via the Internet. I gather IPSEC is the way to go. However, having read the manual I am completely lost. Could someone please direct me to the idiot's guide on how to set up a VPN using IPSEC in Fedora (tunnel mode I think). |
This is the first time I've ever heard of vpn, but I typed "vpn" into google:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...=Google+Search And less than half way down the page I see: VPN Tutorial - Introduction to VPN VPN HOWTO VPN Tutorial - VPN Tutorial Virtual Private Network starter Anyway, from what I've read about it(Virtual Private Network, wtf?), it sounds overly complicated for what your user is asking for. Why not just set up sftp? Need login? Then use ssh. |

Hadn't thought of that - reading about it now! Thankyou so much.

You're welcome. I try to remind people, they weren't a MS expert the first time they started using it either...
