Epson Workforce 840 Scanner
I just installed Mint 15 Olivia w/KDE desktop and I have spent 4 dsys and nights trying to get my Epson All-n-One installed. It is a Workforce 840, and I have gone to the download page for the drivers and installed (or tried too!!) iscan-data_1.24.0-2_all.deb, iscan_2.29.2-1~usb0.1.ltdl7_amd64.deb, iscan-network-nt_1.1.0-2_amd64.deb. However, when I try to start iscan I get an error msg saying. "Can't send commands to scanner, check scanner status." I can print just fine. This is a network printer. The output from scanimage -L is :No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different......, and the output from groups :paco adm lp cdrom sudo dip plugdev lpadmin scanner sambashare. Can anyone give me some advice as to where to go from here? I had it working in Mint14 however, I can't for the life of me remember what I did. I had to add something to some conf. files in the /etc but don't know which ones and my notes are lost too! Any help would sure be appreciated.

There's an entry for it on the Open Printing Database. Maybe it will help.
Epson provides Linux drivers in *.rpm and *.deb formats. There's an "Accept License" dialog before you can see the driver list. |
Thank you for you very fast reply, I have these drivers installed (Printer) and they are working fine. I didn't make myself very clear it is the scanner that I cannot get installed, I have run the drivers mentioned quite a few times and Mint 15 does not find my scanner. I just cannot get Mint 15 to find the network scanner. Thanks again for the prompt reply and I look forward to more help.

Thanks. I tried comparing the drivers you listed with the file names at the links and wasn't sure they were exactly the same.
Do you have xsane installed? Try starting if from a terminal and post any error messages it throws here, being sure to surround them with "code" tags, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the quick reply window. If it's not installed, install it and etc. It should be in the repos. That may tell us where the search for the scanner is hanging up. |
Not sure what you meant by code tags, and didn't see any "Go Advanced" button either

I have never had to deal with this problem myself; I did once have an Epson CX300 (I think), but both the printer and scanner elements worked fine, but that was eight years ago and I used a *.ppd file to get it working. I found a long thread with several possible diagnostic steps on the Debian forums. Maybe some of them will give you a hint. Here's another long thread from the Ubuntu forums that might help. Maybe we'll get lucky and someone who has more clues than I will see this thread and help us. As regards the "Go Advance" button, in my display it's under the reply box just to the right of the "Post Quick Reply" button. |
I follwed the advice in both of the threads and still no luck. It is a network printer, not usb. If I
Code:
lsmod |
The plot has gotten thicker I am afraid. As a result of
Code:
apt-get install -f The following extra packages will be installed: libsane Suggested packages: hpoj hplip libsane-extras sane-utils The following NEW packages will be installed: libsane 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. 1 not fully installed or removed. Those lines were wrapped and the document is set to read-only mode, as saving will modify its content. How can I correct this? If I move or delete the file and run Code:
dpkg configure -a |
Code:
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libsane_1.0.23-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb (--unpack): I'll have to think about this. Try this; it's a shot in the dark but it can't hurt, might help: Remove hplip and xsane completely, one at a time, and note the contents of /etc/sane.d/fujitsu.conf at each step (it wouldn't hurt to pop them into a text file so comparisons could be done). Code:
apt-get purge [packagename] It might shed some light on what's happening. ^:-/ At this point, I'm hoping that someone with more clues than I comes along! Oh, what's the architecture of your machine? I doubt it has any bearing, but too much information might be better than too little. |
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I am afraid things have changed again. Before I recieved your reply I entered
Code:
dpkg --configure -f This is where I made a big mistake, I used a text editor to go thru the entire file and insert LF to shorten the long lines to 255 or less characters, then issued Code:
dpkg --configure -f I still can not get scanner to working and am afraid maybe I have messed up the entire dpkg file. Is there a way to renew or rebuld the file at this point or is it time for a new install? Thank you so much for your time and patience with me and my lack of knowledge. |
