screensavers and backlight
 

Hi,

I have noticed that the backlight is not switched off when the blank screensaver is activated on my laptops and netbooks using Ubuntu and Debian. Why is that? This must be a very good way to save battery. Is it a hardware thing or is it just me not getting the settings right?

Which desktop are you using ... Gnome, KDE, Xfce ... ?

Gnome and LXDE at the moment and Xfce in the past.

You could use Gnome power manager, or KPowersave (that is the one I use) KPowersave has a panel applet that you can left click on to configure it. You should be able to set it to use DPMS to shut your screen off when the computer is inactive.

If you are using Gnome:

AFAIK the blank screensaver is not intended to turn the screen off, just to provide a fallback if no other screensavers are installed or if the warm-up time on your monitor is long but burn-in is a problem.

If you want to save power, as alan99 said then use the 'Put display to sleep when inactive for' feature in Gnome Power Management ( System --> Preferences --> Power Management --> On Battery Power Tab ).
