Fedora Live USB Works on one computer but not on another

Ok I have a 4GB Mini Attache PNY USB Stick, and have successfully downloaded Fedora 11 on it, but when I try booting from it on my computer I get the following error:
"
Missing Operating System
Missing Operating System
No Operating System Found
"
But when I try it on another computer (Vista, the other was XP), it works. Is this my BIOS? If so how can I fix it?

Thank you!

linus72 07-20-2009 04:35 PM

Yep
sounds like your bios
also check that the HD group is booting first
not cdrom or floppy

Yeah I did. If it is the bios how could I fix it?

You can check the computer manufacturer's (unless it's a clone, in which case you'll want the motherboard manufacturer's) website for an updated BIOS. Follow their instructions for installing the update.

I can't find it. My computer is a Windows XP Gateway Laptop.

michaelk 07-20-2009 05:28 PM

Post the model number of the laptop.
Does the computer boot windows XP successfully?
Is the BIOS is configured to boot from a USB device first.
Do you have any other USB storage devices plugged into the computer?
Not enough information to know if it is a BIOS problem that requires an update.

My Laptop DOES successfully boot Windows XP.
Model Number:Gateway MX6027
Only if you consider USB Mouses and keyboards storage devices.

-Some Questions:
1.If I set the computer to boot from USB Device first, will it still boot from Windows if it fails?
2.How do I set USB Device to be first? When I go to the BIOS menu, then go to boot part, and click enter on USB Storage device it does nothing, along with all of the other parts. Do I move the Entry up?

linus72 07-20-2009 06:11 PM

Yes, you must move the usb up as first device
it will boot windows if the usb boot fails

michaelk 07-20-2009 06:24 PM

Yes BIOSs will automatically go to the next device on boot order list if the current device does not exist or is not bootable. Not familiar with BIOS options of Gateways but yes the device at the top of the list boots first. So if a USB device is not first it needs to be moved up the list.

FedoraLinuxLover 07-20-2009 06:49 PM

Thanks

Thanks, I tried that and it worked. But why does it not work when it is not first?

linus72 07-20-2009 06:54 PM

that's so if your hd dies or something you can change the bios to boot from different media
network, lan, cd, floppy, etc

i don't know:)

so, did you get it going?
which one are you using gnome or lxde?

did you go get flash player yet?

Well, it is freezing for me, but I am using LXDE. But you don't mind if I add you as a friend do you?

linus72 07-20-2009 07:07 PM

No
I don't mind

it's freezing?
you mean the desktop?

when it's freezing is the little light blibking on your usb?
if it is that's cause it's saving info back to usb

couple pointers-

it will run alot faster if you make your usb ext3/fat32
meaning 1st partition on usb is ext3
2nd partition is fat32

1st partition is bootable and usses grub

reason for fat32 partition?
so you can move files from ext3 partition and dindows.

2nd pointer
open the "services" thing from menu
and turn off "cups" and anything you don't need running

3rd
uninstall cups + other stuff you don't need

4th
open firefox and goto "edit/preferences"
from toolbar
st it up to delete browsing history, cache, etc
except passwords
set it up to delete it when firefox closes automatically

don't try to get updates unless you made a pretty big
persistentce thingy

Description of Freezing:

Whenever I click enter to choose a boot option [freezes]
Whenever I wait for it to boot once it gets to 1 [freezes]
Whenever I click tab [freezes]
I'm putting this in a new thread

linus72 07-20-2009 07:21 PM

Oh
you mean at boot?

mmm...
uh....mmm

does it show a menu at boot?

here's my syslinux.cfg
modified by me

Code:

label local
menu label Boot from local drive
  localboot 0xffff

the only things I changed was the "timeout 0"
setting it to 0 it will just boot, no menu

to set which one to boot use "menu default"
see how it has the first entry as "menu default"?

and I gave full path to kernel/initrd/splash.jpg
which is in the "syslinux" folder
so just add /syslinux/
before them as above

please explain more about the freezing?
does it say
"assuming drive cache write thru"
or something like that?

FedoraLinuxLover 07-20-2009 07:27 PM

So do I change my syslinux.cfg to what you posted above?

FedoraLinuxLover 07-20-2009 07:34 PM

Don't forget to go to new thread

linus72 07-20-2009 07:35 PM

yes
try changing it to that

Quote:

default linux0
timeout 0
it should just start booting

FedoraLinuxLover 07-20-2009 07:43 PM

I tried it, but look:
Code:

Default vesamenu.c32
timeout 100

that's what it looked like, maybe that was the problem
but I changed it to
Code:

Default linux0
      timeout 0

but when I tried booting, it froze at the loader saying the syslinux copyright

linus72 07-20-2009 07:49 PM

did you try also editing the syslinux.cfg
so it says

Quote:

/syslinux/vmlinuz0
/syslinux/initrd0.img
just add the /syslinux/
in front of where it says kernel and initrd
like

Quote:

kernel /syslinux/vmlinuz0
append initrd=/syslinux/initrd0.img
try that

linus72 07-20-2009 07:50 PM

OH
it's not freezing maybe
just not showing the kernel, etc booting

try letting it load up
if the light is blinking on usb while it's booting
then it's ok
see if it loads up
give it like a min or so...

Man!
I got something like the following errors (sadly I can't use a screen capturer during something like this)
It took a while to load
when loaded I saw the little fedora loader thing
then it said something like "wrong fs" than it said stuff and it said Good Luck! and showed fields that begun with #bash

ok what were the old settings supposed to be like, I'll try them again but make sure there's not the 100. Do you know the old stuff in the .cfg file?

It might be, I don't remember, but let me try again, but don't leave the forum please.

FedoraLinuxLover 07-20-2009 08:22 PM

I notice there is an extra zero, but it means 10. Because when there is only one zero there's only 1 second time out. But the 1 still froze.

Let me try something else. Hey the Linux0 does the zero mean anything like 0 timeout?

linus72 07-20-2009 08:31 PM

your losing me
exactly what appears at boot?
a timer?

type in "linux0"
without the quotes
at the bootline, before it boots
meaning set the timeout back to 5 or 10
which would be 50 or 100

I don't understand what your saying. What I can say is that the blue boot menu appears. Then sometimes it only gets to 1 and then freezes, or if I press enter then choose an option it freezes, how do I stop this is my question

linus72 07-20-2009 09:09 PM

I don't think it's freezing
it may be booting

does the little light start blinking in the usb
when you think it's freezing at boot?

It blinks a green light, yes. But does the 0 in Linux0 mean anything like the timeout is 0?

linus72 07-20-2009 09:24 PM

nah, it's just aname dude
I named mine "blue" and for the initrd.gz
I named it "waves"

it' don't matter relally, errr..

seriously

does the lights keep blinking and it loads up or what?
give it like 2 min from boot
and watch and see how much blinking is going on

It worked, but I get a error:

that's bad
i need you post or somehow enter into this post your syslinux.cfg for the 1st entry
linux0

?

linus72 07-20-2009 09:42 PM

it should look similar to this

label linux0
menu label Boot
kernel /syslinux/vmlinuz0
append initrd=/syslinux/initrd0.img root=UUID=8836-09F7 rootfstype=vfat rw liveimg overlay=UUID=8836-09F7 quiet rhgb

FedoraLinuxLover 07-21-2009 10:10 AM

Let me find it

FedoraLinuxLover 07-21-2009 10:11 AM

I don't exactly know what you mean by the "First Entry" since the lines you put aren't what I'd consider the "first entry".So,I'll paste the whole thing.
