SuSE 8.2 on Inspiron 8200

On my Inspiron 8200 I started with SuSE 7.1, and recently I have upgraded to SuSE 8.2. Compared to SuSE 7.1 the installation went really smooth.

I have chosen SuSE, because I have to maintain 4 computers, and it takes me less time when using SuSE (compared to Slackware and Red Hat). There are a couple of nice how-to's for the Inspiron 8200 on the web. (Some of them in German).

Linux runs better on my Inspiron than Windows (which was installed by Dell). Unfortunatly Dell has terminated the possibility to order computers with Red Hat as platform (perhaps Bill didn't want this???).

:D

dzt 10-21-2003 05:23 AM

: )) i never used suse...

but i really dont like redhat.. and running slack now..

what is it different in suse?

StarTux 10-21-2003 05:50 AM

SuSE uses YAST (yet another setup tool) for tweaking the system. This is quite intuitive and easy to use. Of course, all hard-core geeks will say it is way better to edit the system files manually, but somehow this seems much faster.

On the inspiron, I could install SuSE 8.2 without any problems. I don't know why you don't like Red Hat, but SuSE installation, maintanance and use is quite straight-forward.

If you would like to try SuSE out, we should try to find a way you can get the iso's. I am willing to make them for you, and send them if you have access to an FTP server.

dzt 10-21-2003 01:43 PM

oh thanks man that is very kind of you.. I think I am fine with slack but thanks..

Odubhth4igh 10-21-2003 11:41 PM

mds00 10-22-2003 06:18 PM

Im running Slak 9.1 on my 4100. Works like a charm, except for the stupid framebuffer support on my Radeon 7500.

megaspaz 10-22-2003 06:24 PM

i have used a razor blade to etch off the "1" in 8100 and used a grey sharpie to put "2" in it's place so now i too am running linux on an inspiron 8200!!!!

Inspiron 8200 running Fedora

Ran Red Hat 9 before switching to Fedora, about to switch to SuSE 9.0 just for the heck of it.

Anybody running SuSE 9 like it?

unclejohnny 12-31-2003 08:13 AM

I have an I8200 that started out with RH7, then 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 8.0, and then RH9. Now I running Fedora. Can someone tell what's the difference between RH9 & Fedora (other than the name...lol). Thinking of going back to RH9.

sxa 01-02-2004 01:21 AM

My friend got him an old dell laptop from ebay for xmas.. I am not sure the current OS he has on it.. I know its winblows somthing.. but maybe I will talk him into putting linux on it.. since he is not planning to do too much with it anyways.. and it would be a great learning experience...

n0xide 01-03-2004 08:51 AM

I am. I just tried mandrake and didnt like it to much. So now im installing debian. We will see how we like that :P But as for a question. anybody know how to get their Touch Pad to work on linux. And yes im a Inspiron 8200 owner
:newbie:

fishynet 01-03-2004 01:25 PM

Both the Internal stick mouse and the touchpad should work out of the box in debian, configuring a external USB mouse is a diffrent story though. (still not too hard)

sxa 01-04-2004 12:34 AM

My USB mouse works just fine with Fedora Linux..

My question is does anybody know how to configure or a solution to the ACPI problem on Dell Laptops. When the laptop stay on for a few minutes it will just freeze. I now have Mandrake 9.2 installed and still the same problem please help... show me the light.

Linux on Inspiron 8200

I'm running Red Hat 9 Linux on an Inspiron 8200. However, I use the term "running" loosely.

I bought the laptop with XP professional. I just bought a second internal hard disk on which I installed Red Hat Linux 9. However, when it boots, it just says Grub and nothing else happens. I can get in using recovery mode and that's the closest I've come to running Linux.

I figure I need a new driver for the display.

Any other suggestions?

sxa 01-15-2004 07:49 AM

Sounds like a boot-loader problem to me.. do a goog search for "GRUB HELP" you will find several links back to here with threads on it.. good look...

GLieber 01-15-2004 01:48 PM

Thanks, Steve. I found the Grub manual. I'll go through it and check out the config file and stuff.

sxa 01-15-2004 04:51 PM

No problem, that is some of the very little help I can give...

X Resolution help on Inspiron 8200

Hey, figure this would be an ok place to ask this. What kind of X resolutionas have you guys gotten on your Inspiron 8200 with slackware? I installed the nvidia driver and all, but it's at like 800/600 resolution! It's killing me. I think my problem would be the Monitor setting it's using, does anyone know what monitor i should select as mine to be able to get something higher then 1024/768?

phoe6 01-30-2004 01:50 AM

Did you come across this http://linux.dell.com/desktops.shtml ?
It is the Dell Linux laptop and Desktop forum where users share their view.
Specific to Dell Hardware and any Linux Distro

sxa 01-31-2004 12:17 AM

My question is why would you want to run Linux on a dell, my friends dell that he bought from ebay is crap..

[winkydo] 01-31-2004 05:38 PM

*caugh caugh* ebay! *caugh*

sxa 01-31-2004 08:22 PM

running an inspiron 8500 over here with rh9, kind of.

im having a few problems with getting a dual boot to work with XP and rh9. im about as noob as it gets and was wondering what im doing wrong. The problem is that i couldn't get GRUB to find Win XP. So i then reinstalled XP which of course wrote over GRUB and now i cant boot redhat. i dont have a floppy drive so cant make boot disks and i cant figure out how to boot to RH from a CD, although i can boot from a CD and make it to the recover and/or reinstall console. my partition scheme is as follows

hda1 = win boot (planned to be GRUB)
hda2 = second extended? partition
hda5 = Win XP NTFS
hda6 = RH9
hda7 = SWAP

i was told that it is easier to install windows first then RH but when done cant get windows to boot. im willing to start over from scratch. also the more specific and dumbed down of an explanation givin the more helpful (dont be afraid to affend me i am this dumb). thanks for your help and time.

sxa 02-07-2004 11:31 PM

Those partitions can be tricky, I am working on resizing my NTFS partition so I can install slackware..

well the distro shouldn't matter in this regard. did you edit you XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) file correctly? there's more than just changing the video driver to "nvidia" and having your computer go, "wammo! thanks...". did you specify default resolution and load the correct modules and choose the correct monitor if present in your post-install video setup? if your monitor isn't in there and you chose a generic monitor, did you alter the refresh in the XF86Config (or XF86Config-4) file. i'm running an inspiron 8100 with full 3d support @ 1400x1050 resolution at 24 bbp. you should have no problems getting that on your inspiron 8200.

I am running a similar config on a C840, and found a solution on this forum. My general explanation is here:

You should be able to find linux drivers for you PCI Card.. and also it will help you in the long run if you get rid of windows XP, since you won't keep running back, like I have been doing..
