Sound Issue, SuSE 9.3 IBM Thinkpad
 

This is my first post here, as it is my first day using Linux. I'm about as green to Linux as it gets.

I recently purchased SuSE Professional 9.3 because it bragged up it's "Simple installation" and "Tech Support". The Setup was easy, although I had to configure the LCD and network card using "YaST".

But here's the problem, after all was said and done I can't get the sound configured on it. I'm running a IBM 600E 2645-5AU Thinkpad with a 400Mhz (upgraded from 366) processor. As I said before I installed SuSE Linux 9.3 Professional

I've logged into the YaST Control Center and clicked on "Sound Card Configuration" This opens another YaST Window That says:

The sound card
CS4610 SoundFusion Audio Acclerator

will be configured as the first sound card (snd-card-0)

Then gives the choice of setups- Quick Automatic setup
Normal Setup
More detailed installation of sound cards

It really dosen't matter which I choose because it always says this after I click "next"

It seems you have a Thinkpad 600E laptop
On this laptop, the CS4236 Driver should be used
although the CS46xx chip is detected.
Attempt to probe the configuration of CS4236 Driver?

Whether I click yes or no it says:

An error occured during the installation of:

CS4610 SoundFusion Audio Accelerator

The Kernel module snd-cs46xx for sound support
could not be loaded. This can be caused be incorrect
module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.



The wonderfully helpful SuSE Tech simply said. "Oh, your sound probably isn't supported." But after looking searching for awhile I've found that this seems to be a pretty common problem. (That's also how I found this site)
And my sound can be supported. I just need someone who knows how.

I'm very new to this. If you could help please be patient with my ignorance, we all have to start somewhere :)

So what values should I put in for these?

Why don't you try autoconfigure again, by the book.
Menu=>System=>YaST=>Hardware=>Sound=>Volume
Activate the switches. See maybe Master is muted. Maybe PCM or PCM2 is disabled.

Otherwise as root:
#alsamixer
Activate switches with "m" key. ESC when done.
#alsactl store
Logout, login

I had the same problem w/my 600e. Make sure that you have alsaconf installed. Open a console, as root, type alsaconf. This program will find your card and install the drivers.

Make sure that you have disabled any sound apps that are running before starting alsaconf.

also...make sure you disabled "quick boot" in bios!!! or alsaconf will not find the card...good luck!

Ok Linux_or_bust, I did exactly like you said. First I disabled quick Boot and then logged in as root and ran ALSAconf which had very little trouble configuring my card. I logged out, logged back in and launched the Volume control (per SlackerLX's instructions) and cranked up Volume. I also hit FN PgUp until it beeped really loud just so I knew it would be ready to go. I threw in the nearest CD, and sat back ready to bask in the glory of a job well done.

Except nothing happened.

So, then I opened Xterminal and ran ALSAmixer cranked those up (none were muted )and when I turned up the Master D my speakers clicked. I stored and exited and popped the CD back in.

Again, nothing happened. The CD was running, but no sound.

So then I looked at the Control Center. I clicked on Sound & Multimedia and then Sound System. The sound system is enabled, but when I click Test Sound, nothing.

Here's something odd though: under the SuSEPlugger it says sound device is "IBM CS4610 Soundfusion Audio Accelerator" It says all the same things as my second post except it's not configured. When I click the Configure button Yast Shows under Sound Cards to configure
the "CS4610 Sound Fusion Audio Accelerator"and "Other (not detected)"

Under Already configured sound cards it says "CS4239 Configured as snd-card-0"

Shouldn't it be CS4236?

I'm stumped. But hey, I'm learning alot. :)

SUCCESS!!!!

I deleted the soundcard and reset all the defaults, logged out and logged back in console mode and ran ALSAconf again. Then I logged out and logged back KDE where I heard the loudest startup sound EVER. I readjusted accordingly.

I just sat there for like, 5 minutes pushing the Test button. It felt good.


I really couldn't have done it with out you guys, especially you Linux_or_bust. You told me in one post what I spent hours and hours googling for. After reading alot of the forums this is really a great site with great people. I'll stick around for awhile! (though I'll probably go to the Newbie Forum!!!!)

I really thought I had this beat.

Now every time I shut down the laptop when I restart there's nothing.
if I logout and run alsaconf and then log back in it works fine. But then if I log in as another user, nothing again. It's not muted as i've run the alsamixer several times trying to get it to work. It's also not just CD sound...when I log into the Control Center and test the sound it dosen't do anything. (I also check the volume on my laptop using Fn PgUp -it's on)

So, exactly what am I doing wrong here? Do I need to store these values somehow?


Personally I think the penguins turn the sound off so I don't hear them laughing at me ;)
