Reverse/backwards usb to IDE?
Hi folks
I have found this is not an easy topic to google because of the large amount of USB to IDE gadgets available. There are a few similar threads elsewhere but nothing quite matches what I'm trying to achieve. I have a PC with only USB1.1 and I would like USB2. I definately have no spare PCI slots, but I do have a spare IDE slot. Can I "convert" this to a USB? This only has to be recognised when Linux is running. Other threads that talk about similar topics have the requirement that the PC hardware recognises a connected USB disk so that it can be booted from, but that's not my intention. So back to the question: can USB to IDE (the reverse direction) be done? Thanks. |
It can not be done because USB devices requires to much from the computer to control it. If you have a NIC connected to an expansion slot, you could get a NIC/USB/SATA combo card. I have a Koutech PC720 that works well in Linux. I think SIIG JU-2NG011 should work too.

Unfortunately NIC is built onto the M'Board. I've seen a couple of articles on similar things with IEEE1394/firewire so I'll have a look at that. 1394 might be more promising as I believe the hardware does more of the memory managment and stuff like that.
Thanks for your swift response. |
Hmmmm maybe not. I may have just seen a badly translated page from japanese and grabbed the wong end of the english stick.
