problem-- headset: no sound
 

Hello, I have a headset with earphones and a mouthpiece. It has two plugs and six places to plug it in. No matter what way I plug it in, I still don't hear any sound. Also I want to use Skype, but when I download the Skype for ubuntu, it says: error, wrong architecture. My friend told me to use ekiga, but when I use ekiga, I can only hear half of what he says. I would rather use Skype especially since most of the people I know have never heard of ekiga.

Hi swooshmaiden, Welcome to lq. Does the headset work at all? Have you configured it through alsamixer? Pertaining to Skype, what are you downloading and from where?

I don't know whether the headset works or not, but it should. I don't know what alsamixer is! how can I configure the headset?

I am downloading from skype.com but when the ubuntu download didn't work someone suggested I try the debian download? is that right

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? You should have some sort of mixer from your desktop, i.e., gnome-alsamixer, x-audio-mixer, etc. You can try some different settings to get the headset working. Once you get that working and get the correct skype version installed you'll have to configure skype to use the proper devices in the settings menu.

here is a picture ofmy alsamixer thinking my headphones do not exist. It is very sad. help me please.

Do you hear any sound from the headphones if you raise the volumes of the surround or center channels? Is this a laptop, what model?

It's not a laptop actually. It's a flat box desk top computer that my boyfriend built for me out of parts he purchased in Hong Kong. It is actually rather sketchy, it makes a terrible buzzing sound whenever it starts up. with your suggestion, something has changed, at least. the message is no longer "no audio feedback." I'll get back to you when I know for sure if it works

This is so weird. For awhile it was just saying "call failed," and making a nice little noise. Which was progress of a sort. But now it's gone back to the same old error message, "Problem with Audio Playback." (sorry, I mis-stated the words of the error message in my last post.) Also, my friend who I'm trying to call says I don't even appear to be ON Skype from his end.

at least I have established now it is a problem with Skype, not a problem with the headset. before I followed your suggestion, I was not hearing anything through your headset. Now I hear the little beep that happens when someone says you a message through gmail chat, so the sound is working

I too have a similar problem regarding the head sets. I have a Logitech Headset with MIC but it is not working at all. I think it has not been detected at all i have posted the screen shot from alsamixer.

@ swooshmaiden, Can you get to the Skype configuration and set the proper sound devices? Did you go through the how to I linked in post #5?

You might try one of the following module options for your card. or depending on which model you have. The two available for your chipset are as follows.

thanks peacedog, by looking more closely at the troubleshooting for skype section on the page you linked to in post five, I managed to solve half my problem. Now the mike works fine, but the headphones are a problem. The sound in them cuts in and out, making a buzzing sound. as if I was playing an extremely scratchy CD. I got this same effect both using Skype and watching videos on youtube. I can distinguish maybe a word or two from every sentence (if I'm lucky) and sort of hear the tone of voice.

maybe I need to adjust Sound Preferences? I changed everything in sound preferences to ALSA, and I clicked on the little test boxes, but I don't really know what clicking on the test boxes actually does. All I know is when I click on them they beep until I tell them to stop. what does that accomplish? is it good or bad if the test boxes beep at me?

i'm sorry to keep bothering you. but its really tricky to make this work! I know the headphones aren't broken because I tried them in one of the computers on the computer lab, and I got perfect sound quality for Skype. So it's my computer that's the problem.
