Big sound problem, plz help

Ok, here is the deal. Yesterday I booted to linux, no problem at all. That day we had some problems with the electricity so for some time the computer did'nt get any power at all. Now I know this is'nt supposed to be, but if my computer does'nt get power, the bios gets scrud up. Now normally that's not a big problem, the only thing that happens is that the computer forgets the time and the date. But this time something more serious happened. I boot in to linux and this is what happens.

Starting sound driver: als4000/lib/modules/2.4.10-4GB/misc/snd-card-als4000.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.4.10-4GB/misc/snd-card-als4000.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.10-4GB/misc/snd-card-als4000.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.10-4GB/misc/snd-card-als4000.o: insmod snd-card-als4000 failed
failed
....
....
Failed services in runlevel 5: alsasound

As you can see, the sound card is'nt being initialized. Is this possible because the IO and IRQ numbers have been changed because something happened in the bios ? If this is so, how can I set things back the way they used to be ?
I tried inserting the sound module my self. This is what I did :

insmod snd-card-als4000.o

And this is what happened

snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_als4000_set_addr
snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_opl3_new
snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_als4000_interrupt
snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_als4000_configure
snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_als4000dsp_new_mixer
snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_als4000_disable
snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_als4000dsp_new_pcm
snd-card-als4000.o: unresolved symbol snd_mpu401_uart_new

I looked up the configuration of the sound card in windows, and this is what turned up :

location : pci slot 3
PCI - bus 0
device 15
function 0

The last thing I want to say is that I had sound problems before, but not nearly as serious as this. See link

Could any one help, plzzzz

Well, in short, I'd say get that BIOS fixed first. If it's a dead battery issue, they are like 5 bucks here in the US and I doubt much more anywhere else. If it's something else, I'd look into a possible BIOS (or CMOS rather) swap, but that's beyond me, look towards Finegan for guidance there. Because even if you do get it fixed this time, it would appear this could randomly happen whenever the power decides to go. Not really a reliable thing, and sound would only be the the first issue there.

Cool

Hi, thanks for the replie. Say if it is a battery thing, how should I install it in my mother board ?

qanopus 09-27-2002 05:48 AM

Oh, and what kind of battery should I use ?

MasterC 09-27-2002 06:10 AM

Well, that's a damn good question. Actually the battery should be an obvious object on your mobo, sticking out like a sore thumb. It looks like a watch battery. I'd pull it, and take it with me, match it up easier that way at the store.

Cool
