My main reason for using Linux is that is really good s*** .It is so independent in terms of software , even on distros with less software packages or older ones you will find an amazing number of possibilities to choose from . Note how softwareless windows is at instalation , on the other hand linux distros flood you with good quality free programs . I have Slackware 8.0 and use it to :
listen to music(xmms> gqmpeg) , surf the web(kppp>mozilla>galeon , man readings , work with graphics(ee>xv) ,ICQ,TAlK, write reports(abiword) , make budget sheets (gnumeric)
, chess on xboard , (you can do it simultaneously , you know) and is stable all the way , plus is safe .Nevermind window managers (KDE,GNOME,ENLIGHTENMENT,WINDOWMAKER, etc...) Btw a decent Linux CAD would be a great step towards a migration in the near future from windows based Arquitecture and engineering Design professionals . Hollywood film industry already use Linux based computers to generate graphics as Linux is a much powerfull graphic routiner than other OS.

Oh, come on! I remember writing some BASIC programs on some Apple II when I was in middle school
I didn't mean that I couldn't write BASIC, I can. I was writing programs on a BBC-B when I was about 6. I meant that I'm tired of having to write in BASIC because that is all I know. I want to learn a more advanced language.

To get away from Windows. I'm sorry, but that's my best answer.

Every use of those listed....Even games.
I use it for router/firewall, sometimes I turn apache on. I browse web, read mail, write programs and texts, use it for calculations (Open Office). Everything.

I use it for browsing the net, email, and personal finance (gnucash) at least so far. I WANT to use it for audio/video stuff such as burning CDs, recording my vinyl LP collection, ripping CDs etc. I just haven't figured all that out yet. I don't really play games, so I don't care about that.

All that basically comes under the heading "To Get Away From Windows" - sorry.
