What do you use Linux for on your personal PC?
I don't think I have seen this asked and polled before?
And please don't say to get away from Windows, I want real reasons on why you use a computer with Linux.. if its from internet surfing to gaming, to programming, etc. -trickykid |
You forgot hacking! hehehe

I would consider that classifed under programming/development...
|
i just like having something i can play around with. i'm never at a loss for things to do with linux. there's always a milliion things that can be tweaked, changed... i think the best reason is that, if i have a question about how something works, i can go ahead and find out, be it the source code or documentation.

One box is setup as my firewall/router and to watch TV on while I am experimenting with all kinds of other distros on my workstation.
Love the feeling of "freedom" that Linux gives me!! The ability to have over a dozen differnet distros to experiemnt with and the only cost is the CD's to burn them on :D |
Programming/Development, Web Serfin, Documentation and Record Keeping. Would like to play games, but since it's a laptop and I don't have fancy graphics cards I don't play games. Still have to boot into XP to do that.

I use Linux as it is
- free, and - safe Use: - internet browsing - internet downloads - multimedia - office applications - further plans to port my small PWS solutions to apache (that would involve silently removing windows from a PC at my workplace) - everything else except gaming My greatest problem: - cannot uninstall Window$ as my 4 year old baby likes gaming :( (thus keeping two OSs I am always in short of disk space) |
Studying for my RHCE
|
I use Linux for the fact that I keep learning from it.....everytime I sit down at my PC I get up having learned something new. I have to keep track of what I learned you should see my linux note pad. Maybe one day I should turn around and have it published just the way it is. ;)

Anything you can use a computer for i use linux for, as i dont have anything but linux on my computer. ive been windows free for a couple of years and proud of it.
A few years ago i would have said linux is lacking in a few key areas, but now there is no excuse for dual booting. get rid of windows today |
everything
I use Linux for everthing that a pc is used for. I listen to music with grip, and rip mp3's some too, burn cd's with xcdroast, do graphics manipulation with the gimp, write html and maintain my site with gedit ant gftp. The girls of my family have winders pc's, and anything I need outside Linux could be done on them. But I haven't had to use it in a while. I'm floundering along in perl, c, c++, and of course all the good dev stuff is right at hand. It's excellent.

I use it for internet browsing, email, office productivity, programming, music, TV, streaming radio, video playback, graphics, file management, etc.
The only I dont and cant use it for is my games, most of which only run on Windows. But with winex, hope is on the horizon! |
As with everyone it seems, I use it for all but games. Seems that's the biggest drawback at the moment. I think that there needs to be more in that sense. Unfortunately I can't remember if Loki went down the tube or not? I think they were doing some good work! Otherwise, Linux does it all if not better than Windows.

Now that I've got a modem that works with Linux (useless pieces of Diamond USB win-modem crap!) I can put myself into the internet surfing category, graphics and gaming. As soon as I've got my second computer, I'll be on file-serving (home-network, some comps have unbelieivable small harddisks) and when I have finished my degree I'll try to learn a real programming language (BASIC really does begin to suck after a while).

My class project, which the teacher did not like me with, was to make an unbreakable password system that comes up on boot. It was so difficult, my teacher could not break it in the time he had. He gave me an A, but was so defeated! Guess I popped his ego, hehehe. Have to admit though, C/C++ is much more powerful. |
