need fairly small, quick linux

hey guys, i'm getting ready for the school year and trying to set up a computer in my room for typing and other schoolwork. I've tried damn small linux and really love it, but i'd like something that's similar but made to be installed to the hard drive. i'm still selecting a computer (from the junkers sitting around)... it'll be somewhere from 100-266mhz with 64-128mb ram, etc.. you know the deal.

i would be using it for basically word processing, calculations, etc. preferably no games included :)

thanks for any help!

Vector 3.2 is a fast lighter distro - I'm not sure how it would run on those specs - (just an idea)

In general - if you want a GUI it will have to be light, maybe IceWM or Flux.

For all the Window Manger info :

For distribution ideas, check out Distrowatch - currently around 140 of them :

You could try some thing like vector. I have heard peanut is good too but I haven't had a chance to test it properly yet myself.

I've heard alot of good things about peanut

Slackware, Slackware, Slackware. It is fast, stable, and secure without alot of the bloat of other distros.

ehhh i'm a newbie. sorry i didn't mention that. slackware is scary.

The default install of Slackware is easy ... just boot from the install CD, make 2 partitions with fdisk (or cfdisk <- really easy to use) and install :)
BTW you can easily have a functionall (ofcourse depending on what you need) Slackware distro under 200Mb (without KDE or Gnome though), that you can use for C/C++, Java, or Python programming.

I have one with about the same specs and i use Slackware 9. It's not so hard, but some things can make you ask for some help. I recommend Slack and som nice windowmanager like *box, Windowmaker, IceWm etc.
And for browser i'd use Dillo.
