since my resolution is like 800 X 600 i did that i486config and followed the instrutions, but when i rebooted nothing happened.

what is i486config ?? do you mean xf86config ?? you shouldn't have to reboot your system to change the resolution.

tell us the steps you took and what distro, hardware your using and i am sure we could tell you how to change that resolution with ease.

It is much easier to setup X on RedHat machine using XConfigurator
the command is
Xconfigurator
run it as root in console.
