what is i486config ?? do you mean xf86config ?? you shouldn't have to reboot your system to change the resolution.

tell us the steps you took and what distro, hardware your using and i am sure we could tell you how to change that resolution with ease.

-1 for U.S English
-entered for default variant
-no on additional XKB options
-on my moniter manual it said horizontal 30khz to 70 khz, so i put in the default range they have in 31.5- 79 that can do 1280 X 1024 @ 74 HZ
-on my moniter manual it said vertical to be 50 hz to 160 hz so i put in the default range of 40-150. The only reason i didnt add in my correct range was cause i didn't know my @hz.
-pressed enter to put in the default identification/description names and some other ish.
-i put i have 1024k cuz i have the intel graphic card that uses 11mb of my regular ram. (hp stupid idea)

It is much easier to setup X on RedHat machine using XConfigurator
the command is
Xconfigurator
run it as root in console.
