is it possible
 
to upgrade mandrake 7.2 to another version of linux ie red hat or suse

You can upgrade from Mandrake 7.2 to newer versions of Mandrake. Going to another distro, however, will be much more problematic. You can keep your home stuff (providing you have a seperate partition for /home) quite easily, but other stuff will likely not work... for example, if I remember correctly, RH and SuSE put more stuff in /opt that Mandrake ever does, so your PATH would be incorrect and some things wouldn't run.

I suppose, if you had a lot of time on your hands you could update every package you have with a newer version from RH or SuSE's collection (rpm -Uvh for update), but I don't know how well this would work as most things will rely on libraries, etc, that would also need updating.
