Ever since I installed Linux, my DSL has slowed. [averted]

Currently now I have Bellsouth 3mbit dsl, and a while back, I was averaging downloads of 300KBp/s - 500KBp/s, depending on the server.
But, ever since I installed Ubuntu on this machine, I've noticed significant drop - my downloads never get higher than 240KBp/s or so, and DSLreports.com's speed test (on various servers) tells me that I only have 1.2mbit dsl.

My modem is a westell wirespeed (dunno number), and it connects directly to my computer by ethernet.

Anyone have an idea as to what the problem is?

Well I am no expert, but I know a few things you can check/try:

Do you have IPv6 enabled? If so, perhaps disable it.

What is the MTU on the ethernet interface that your xDSL modem is connected to? Or is it connected via USB?

Running iptables? If so is it a basic script that your distro runs at bootup or is it a one that you built?

Using Roaring Penguin's pppoe package for xDSL? What does your config look like (minus password)?

If the modem is connected via your ethernet interface, do you have a number of errors on that interface?

I also have the same service and am getting a pretty decent speed.

IPv6, disabled, no change.
Modem is connected by ethernet, though I don't know how to check/view the MTU.
Iptables is not running.
Not using Roaring Penguin's PPPoE package.
Ethernet interface has no errors.

try this,
find a 1-2 meg download file
download it on windows
download it on linux
count which is faster

I believe you get the logic

(windows tends to make you believe things are faster, :P)

windows used to lie about download speeds. -_-

There used to be much confusion over whether it talked in bits, kilobits, bytes, kilobytes (binary) or kilobytes (denary) all of which makes for big confusion.

There is nothing in Linux that is going to slow your DSL line down..maybe a 'phone call to maBell to check your line?

Yeah, bellsouth blows.

Problem averted.

thanks, though.
